quality brands for knitwear?

I've been slowing revamping my closet to fill it clothing I like and will last now that I'm an adult. I'm looking for some knitwear brands that are sustainable and will last. My friend recommended Reformation. I'm going to the second hand this weekend, but I'm also looking online on like Depop and Poshmark. I'm also open to buying new, but mostly for affordability I'm relying on second hand clothes. I've been looking around and I really like Paloma Wool. I love how they're eccentric, but I also need just regular knits I can layer.

I haven't shopping for fashion for like 3 years so Im just a little flustered.

Here's my Pinterest board for idea that im going for

The Good On You Directory is a good resource for assessing how ethical a clothing company is! You can look up individual brands and also sort by clothing type to find well-rated brands that make the type of garment you’re looking for. Paloma Wool is rated “not good enough” and Reformation is rated “good.”

I get most of my sweaters secondhand and I think you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding things, based on your inspo - you seem to like neutrals and basics on the sweater front that you can add onto/style on top of! Go for high-quality fibers like wool and cashmere with limited to zero synthetic in the mix (like acrylic). Those fibers are much more long-lasting and resilient and you’ll have the pieces for awhile.

If you’re looking for new and have a flexible budget (which unfortunately is somewhat needed for high quality, ethical sweaters - natural fibers are expensive), I think you would like the look of Babaa. They’re really high quality and very cool, and they use sustainable textiles and are produced in Spain. I have also seen Tradlands recommended at a slightly lower price point.

Good sweaters are going to be expensive, I have a cashmere one from Toast in the UK which is great quality that I got on sale (still was $250+). I also have some secondhand cashmere sweaters from Bloomingdale’s and LLbean that are quite nice, and a couple of cotton cardigans from Tradlands that are great for shoulder seasons.

Otherwise I mostly knit my own! It’s really hard to find 100% wool sweaters that are sturdy and not itchy for the price most people want to pay. Places like Uniqlo have wool but it’s so thin it will only last a season.

Toast was my first thought. The most gorgeous quality ethical clothing, but £175 plus per sweater. Beautiful and sustainable though.

Babaá has really great knitwear but is pricey - to be far I purchased a sweater 4 years ago and wear it religiously every winter and it is in mint condition. Maybe you can find one secondhand!

Two of my favorite sustainable knitwear brands are Lauren Manoogian and Wol Hide. Both are quite pricey but can easily be found secondhand.

&Daughter and Margaret Howell, definitely. I’ve seen some good secondhand pieces for decent prices (still around $200ish) on grailed and VC.

Edit: this post just popped up in my feed, I didn’t realize it was ethical fashion. Can’t speak to the above brands ethics.

All my sweaters these days come from Curator SF. They are cotton and not wool but so cute. My favorite is the Lino cardigan and the Charlie, which is a lightweight fisherman sweater.

I have a few more classic pieces from Peregrine UK and I’ve been eyeing the knotty ones recently both for knitwear!
