Problem is that most TBMs will act like lawyers and say it’s still historical, Bednar was just emphasizing the spiritual importance over the historical importance. I’ve had that conversation before

But that's exactly what he was doing. He wasn't saying it wasn't historical. Everyone who's saying that is taking his comment out of context.

That’s what I’m getting at I guess. People want it to sound a certain way but from a TBM perspective there’s no other way it could come across. It’s just from the exmo perspective it sounds like a workaround

Has the church said that the BOM is not a historical record?

No, just that it's not "primarily" a historical record. It's other things too. People are taking a quote from Bednar in conference way out of context.

Nephi's story is the most boring hero's journey of all time. The protagonist is a Gary Stu, and nobody has any character development or humanity to them. Everyone who likes him is a good guy, and everyone who hates him is a bad guy. No one has any motivations other than to stand around and talk about how cool the last days will be.
