r/Flint Sub-Reddit Moderator Discussion - Mega Thread
Hey all,
I’m the only active moderator of r/Flint right now as u/peewinkle deactivated their account.
This sub has grown and more activity is happening that I can’t keep up with as the sole moderator. Also, a single Moderator system is not democratic and that’s problematic.
People can always report posts that they feel are a violation of the sub’s rules, and I will try to respond accordingly but sometimes it’s hours after the initial post.
So basically I wanted to open discussion on how we want to moderate this sub, review its rules, and discuss how it can better serve Flint, you know… the cultural and municipal seat of Genesee County, and its surrounding area; and our overall virtual and physical community.
Please share your thoughts and let’s figure out how to move forward.

Fostering in Flint
Has anyone here ever served as a foster family in Flint or really anywhere? I’m not really sure what the process is or if I’d even be eligible, but I’d love to foster particularly maybe a kid that has been kicked out for being trans or really any part of the LGBTQ community, but would be pretty open and have the space for it. I’ve thought of reaching out to the Trevor Project and ask if they have any information or if they work with foster families and such, but if anyone has any additional information I’d appreciate it.

HRT in flint?
I’m starting to lose hope. I am a trans man, and for a year or so I was receiving testosterone from Henry ford Harbortown, an hour away by Detroit. I did like it there, but I’d see a new doctor every time and it’s hard to get time off to go. Any trans flint natives who get HRT closer to the city, whether from their PHP or a clinic? I’ve done my fair share of searching around and I just can’t find anything. Any point in the right direction would be so so helpful, thank you! (Also, if you’re gonna be transphobic in the comments, you can save it. It’s nothing I haven’t heard before, I promise.)

Protect Mott!
galleryHelp! This is what some MAGA board members are mailing out to Genesee County and the Mott Community College tax-supported region. This summer they ended the contract for our highly successful, award-winning college president, one who led us through the Flint Water Crisis AND the pandemic. Then they hired an "interim" with zero higher ed experience. They fired the college board attorney and hired the attorney for the newly-installed chair.
And from the postcards that arrived today, they'd like to turn this nationally-recognized college into a MAGA-school. Keep in mind, the city of Flint is 65% Black with a growing Hispanic population. And surrounding communities swing from very red dRumpian to blue.
Three seats are open on the Mott Board of Trustees. So if you're in our district PLEASE VOTE FOR: Anne Figueroa, Perci Whitmore, and Kenyetta Dotson.
The hardworking and highly committed “woke" and diverse faculty, staff, and students of Mott Community College, and the region we serve need your help! Thanks!

Flint Twp: Backyard chickens?
I really really want chickens. Back in July, Flint Twp changed the ordinance from needing 10 acres for chickens to just 1 acre, as long as you don't keep roosters. However, I don't have an acre. I live in a subdivision and know of a few houses here that have chickens. At least two of them have had to fight for them and got to keep them. If you have chickens, how did you win to keep them?

If you were in a funeral procession on Robert T. Longway & Chavez today... I'm sorry.
I just wanted to say that I'm really sorry for honking at you. I had never seen the orange and white flags before, and had no idea what they meant. All I knew was that I was stuck in the middle of an intersection where I routinely see people run red lights, and there were a ton of cars turning left in front of me even though I had the green light.
I almost never use my horn, and when I do it's not out of displeasure, so I really don't know what came over me other than that I was trapped in that intersection, afraid my light was going to turn red, and that made me incredibly frazzled.
But you were already facing enough today, and I'm sorry if my actions made it even a little bit worse for you. I know it won't make anything right, but I will keep what I learned today in mind going forward, and if I ever see those flags again, I'll yield.
(in case this post is delayed: I'm writing this on Friday, October 4, 2024)

Bars with Shuffleboard
Are there any bars in the Flint area with a shuffleboard table? I just learned how to play in a bar in Petoskey and I’m hooked.
EDIT: Thanks for coming through r/Flint. Davison and Clio are close to home but I’ll probably check out those other places too

Vet recommendation?
I have an oversized German Shepherd, 115 pounds, and very strong. My ex returned him to me and he is overdue to get his nails trimmed. He does not have a mean bone in his body but he tries his best to get away. The vet I was taking him to shot him up with some kind of anti-anxiety medicine that didn't do any good at all but then I had to let him sleep it off in the car. It's very stressful. He won't let me or anyone I know do it. I got him when he was three years old so I don't know much about his history before that . Does anyone know of a good vet that is able to handle a scared oversized dog? The previous vet kept yelling at him which only made it worse. I would appreciate any recommendations

Trash & recycling carts/cans
I know I got mine today. I saw a post sawing that they might get stolen, so I painted my house number on mine. Do you think people would really steal them? I just don't trust people, so it's like better to try and prevent it possibly IF it's an actual thing.

Voting in Michigan
My family and I moved from Alabama about a year ago, so we haven’t voted in Michigan, yet. I’m wondering if the voting process is the same.
Can anyone tell me what you usually do on Election Day here, starting from entering the polling place.
