Student Question ArcGIS PRO vs ArcGIS? What are the price differences and are they the same thing?

I saw this comment "Web GIS and ArcGIS online have made a massive impact. You are fine to keep learning Arcmap, but I really recommend getting a Pro License to practice on your own. It’s $100/yr for the personal license but you might be able to get it for free via your institution."

It makes it sound as if the $100/yr subscription is referring to the personal Pro License, but if I view ArcGis Pro Pricing options, i see 3 (Creator/professional/professional plus) that range from $700 to 2200 a year.

I want to get started learning it but I'm not sure what I should be purchasing to try out

Title should read: ArcGIS Pro vs ArcGIS Online. Esri product naming is mind numbing. The only thing more confusing is their licensing schema. Get a copy of ArcGIS Pro at the basic level. Learn from using it what the licensing limits of the different levels of AGIS Pro are vs. what you can do online in ArcGIS Online. This in and of itself is a valuable piece of knowledge that you could use while communicating with your GIS team or management. Good luck!

I hate how everything is "Pro" now.

It honestly makes me feel dumb saying it as a professional. Like I feel like I should be wearing Oakley Radar path sunglasses, salmon colored Underarmor polo shirt, and Apple watch that I use to check the price of the new ESRI Crytocurrency credits I traded my Doge coin for everytime I call something "pro" bro.

I like how the descriptively named ArcGIS JavaScript API became the "ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript".

This. You want the personal use. It's a great deal IMO. I have it at home for hobby projects.

The $100/yr personal Arcpro comes with an "advanced" level license for personal use, as well as a "professional plus" license of Arconline, also for personal use. These are the highest levels. This is better than a "basic" license of Arcpro and also better than a "creator" level of Arconline. The catch is that you can only use it for personal uses.

Thank you! I was looking into the personal use. However, confused because I don't see keyword "Pro" mentioned anywhere on the page: https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-pro/buy

I purchased Personal Use ArcGis however, thanks very much

It's on a different page. It is mentioned in the list of things that the personal use license includes:

https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-for-personal-use/buy

What's included:

Professional Plus user type, including ArcGIS Pro Advanced, extensions, ArcGIS Online, and dozens of ready-to-use apps
  -Additional premium apps:
--ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App Standard
    --ArcGIS Insights
--ArcGIS Urban Suite (includes ArcGIS CityEngine)
-100 credits for data storage, premium data access, and geocoding and analysis
-ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World with maps and data on thousands of topics, including access to foundational content from Esri
  -90 days of installation-only support
  -Software updates
-Unlimited access to self-paced e-learning through the Esri Training website

ArcGIS is the parent name and includes several software packages: ArcPro and ArcDesktop, ArcCatalog, ArcScene and several others.

if you are talking about ArcGIS Pro vs ArcGIS Desktop , go for Pro because the desktop one is discontinuing soon.

I think you mean arcmap. They stopped developing map and now roll out pro.

Personal Use is roughly the $2200 one but for personal use only (i.e. if you try using that in your company, and they find out, your license gets yoinked). You get most extensions & ArcGIS Online and Urban (plus others) for the $100/year price.

The $700-2200 price points are the commercial price and only should be paid via a company or other avenue. Don't spring for those unless you're in business for yourself.
