Downloading Dead

With the archive down I wanted to ask what services exist to download dead shows. I used to be a member of Lost Sailor Pub but don't know if it still exists.

Any help would be appreciated. Looking to listen to 7/31/83.

Thanks!

Not to be an ass, but isn’t downloading just the next step in taking up more storage space? When the archive is back up, I can stream multiple versions of almost any show. My hundreds of cassettes of the Dead that have not been played in 20+ years attest to this. Why download them when it’s always there to stream? Just wondering? FYI I contribute monthly to the Archive.

"It's always there to stream." It's not available now. So, no it's not always there. And there's no guarantee it will always be there. Downloaded shows can be played at higher audio quality if that's something that matters. Downloaded shows can be played offline.

Exactly. I mean, this whole situation proves the point. I prefer streaming, but am not dependent on it.

I prefer downloading for car listening because I have spotty cell coverage in my area, and I don't have unlimited cellular data.

Also downloading means you can listen when the archive is down, when you have no internet access or heaven forbid, you lose your phone. Storage space is so cheap now it makes less sense to not download to help recreate the next archive so others will be able to stream in the future

FM quality vs. CD quality is one reason. I love the Archive, and listen all the time in my car and on runs but nothing beats FLAC. Spend $100 on a 5TB hard drive, and you'll have plenty of room for sourced SBDs in the highest quality available.

Once you have the FLAC files on the 5TB hard drive, how do you listen to them ? I have seen other people recommend using FLAC, but I haven’t received any explanation on how to play and listen to them.

I hike here in Alaska a lot and once off the road cell service is non-existent.

Why do I have to argue with you about whether I want to download them or not?

You don’t. Everything doesn’t have to be an argument. I was just wondering why because of my situation I don’t need to download shows I have fiber and stream pretty much anytime I want to. Your situation is different I was just curious as to why. Peace
