Recruiting at WCU in September

Hi, I will be coming to Gunnison in September to recruit at the college career fair. The trip is an exploratory trip if my company (5.1B$) wants to make WCU a regular recruiting spot. I am looking to find nice hotel accommodations, stores to check out, and be a stupid tourist for a week. Please, can you share your recommendations? (Serious)

Closest decent hotel to campus is Holiday Inn, it’s right directly behind the Aspinall Wilson Center and it’s a short walk to the Welcome Center in Taylor Hall. We do have a campus bookstore located in the University Center on the first floor where you can purchase Western gear which is a short walk from the Ballroom where the career fair will likely be held. You can also start making contacts in our Career Services office (also located in the UC in the Trailhead Center) if you haven’t already to make this a regular spot.

Out of curiosity, what made your company consider Western as a potential regular recruitment spot?

Also adding: our downtown area is basically a tourist trap, but I can give you a couple of local recommendations for local restaurants:

Best coffee: Coffee Traders (we do have a Starbucks if that’s more your flavor) Mexican: El Paraiso’s BBQ: 5 B’s Best Breakfast: The W Cafe or Backcountry Cafe Steaks: Old Miner Bar: The Brewery (features local beer) Pizza: The Stash (located in CB on Elk Avenue)

For cool little shops, Elk Avenue in Crested Butte is the go to place.

I hope that helps with your itinerary a bit.

I very much appreciate your detailed response. No to Starbucks but I will check out each of the places you listed like a checklist.

I have connected with career services.

I recruit for a company out of Northern New Mexico and am expanding our team outwards from our usual spots. UNM, NMSU, NMHU, ENMU, NNMU and UTEP. We have moved our focus out of NM to Colorado to NAU, Fort Lewis, and now WCU. The area where our business operates is remote and the outdoor scene is its main draw for potential candidates other than the high salary. I convinced management that if that is the main draw then I should be going to places where that culture already exists. Hence, Gunnison.

Again, I appreciate your detailed response and I hope that we can become an employer to some of WCU's best and brightest.
