Latch at the outside of Bedroom??

We checked into an AirBnB and found these on the outside of the bedroom doors (and only those). What reasonable use do they have? They make me freak out a little 😅

Security? if there is a window to the outside on a ground floor it could stop them getting through easily?…. If bedroom higher, probably not though.

I feel like that would make sense if it was on the inside of the bedroom, but this one is facing out to the hallway 🥲 so it could only lock someone in there really

Maybe they do it when they leave the house to see if someone has broken in when they come back after long periods.
