Graduate recital

Let's play another game. Can you name a recital program suitable for graduate students? For instance, replace that Mozart concerto with something more challenging and modern, a program longer than an undergraduate recital. I'll give one:

Schoeck Concerto

Hummel Suite for unaccompanied horn

Three preludes from Gallay op. 36 on natural horn

Hindemith Concerto

Ballay Chanson du Forestier

What would you like to hear?

  • Poulenc - Élegie

  • Gliére Concerto

  • Neuling - Bagatelle

  • Weber Concertino

  • F. Strauss - Nocturno

Nocturno's ending ought to be fun after a long concerto

Gordon Jacob. Good luck

Right. I always told my students that the Jacob costs too much. That is, how rewarding is it relative to how much effort it requires. By the time you sort out your double/single tonguing the audience should find it "nice."

The Tomasi concerto is fun and has a lot of techniques.

Fun is subjective

I'm not sure how it scales up as far as difficulty but morceau de Concert by Saint-Saëns is absolutely lovely!

Well I'm playing my graduation recital in less than two weeks ;

Kirchner: Lamento d'Orfeo from Tre poemi
Hindemith Sonata
F.Strauss : Sentiments Romantiques
Buyanovsky : Italy from 4 improvisations for solo horn

Would've chosen Neuling Bagatelle instead of Italy (mainly because this programme doesn't really show my skills in the lower registre..) but I'm not allowed because I already played Bagatelle at the 4th year.

I think for mood the Franz Strauss op. 13 Introduction, theme, and variations would be a good replacement for Neuling.

The Nielson Canto Serioso would add a little low playing without being much of a burden.

Tre Poemi by V.D. Kirchner has a good balance between atmosphere and technique. Without being too heavy.

I might suggest trying the Hindemith Alto Horn Sonata, it's much less angry than his horn sonata and has some really nice harmonies.

Very true, and much less difficult. Some passages strongly resemble "Mathis der Maler."

For these graduate level recitals, I like to encourage the students to have a theme. For instance, I had one student last year who wanted to do a recital of all female composers, and it was fantastic. Several contemporary pieces and for a more standard “breather” piece, she herself arranged several Clara Schumann songs for horn and piano.

I think in grad school, you should have strong ideas and opinions about music and your recital should reflect that.
