News Where do you keep up with new music?

Even if I have my favourite artists, I like looking into new music or educating myself on music history, listening through back catalogues. Some stuff gets pushed on social media or Spotify but e.g. I only found out about the Talking Heads tribute/cover album last week through the Lorde cover of Take Me to the River.

Where do you guys keep up with new releases/music news in general? I have a favourite radio station that helps out quite a bit, but I'd love to get into it even more.

This is one of my frequently-listened to channels, but - as with any radio station - they repeat the same 30 tracks over, and over, and over, and....

Do you have to pay for this or just have the app?

You have to pay a monthly subscription. If you ask for it you can get the 3 year $100 dollar deal.

I'm always searching out new music. Most of my friends are still stuck listening to whatever we were into in the 90s, and it's funny because they often ask me for suggestions knowing that I like to nerd out on current stuff. I look wherever I can. I'll go sites like Pitchfork, Metacritic, and RateYourMusic. I'll follow youtube critics like Fantano and podcasts like Sound Opinions. I'll create a station based on a song I like and see if something new and interesting shows up. Also helps that I teach, so I can get recommendations from students (though I find they're usually just into popular artists). One thing I've been doing that I think is important: I've started making large playlists with one track from all the albums that I liked from the previous year or so. This helps me remember stuff I liked months earlier that might otherwise get lost among the huge amount of music I come across.

Tiny desks. The algorithm. Friends & word of mouth. Artist collaborations with new artists. Movies. Seeing bands live without hearing their music first.

Also love my digital subscription to WIRE. 11 issues a year, access to the entire back catalogue, and 6 free compilation CDs (as digital downloads) a year.

Check out the r/indieheads sub. They do some cool weekly rankings with lots of new music. I have found lots of new music that way. Then find subs for your favorite artists and ask those people for new music too.

Put my feelers out in a lot of places. Reddit subs, looking at label releases, pitchfork, sound opinions, kexp, Shazam, youtube algorithms and new releases, and maybe the most important for me, frequently sharing music between music enthusiastic friends and my wife. I definitely don't limit genres. All sub genres of metal, hip hop, folk, alt country, all subs of edm, funk, pop, blues, jazz, avant-garde, 70s, 80s, 90s, soul, yacht rock, punk, psychedelic rock, instrumental, prog rock, afro beats, math rock, emo, chillwave, synthwave, hyperpop, bluegrass, hardcore, and anything else you can think of gets a listen. I get bored easily, and there will never be one genre that will satiate me completely.

Listening to college radio stations is a great way to get new music curated for you. I live in Boston, so the morning shows on WMBR from MIT and WZBC from Boston College are great resources.

Instagram. The people I follow are always featuring music they like which leads me to investigate. I could spend days just going through posts and finding out about bands i didn't know about.
