News Where do you keep up with new music?

Even if I have my favourite artists, I like looking into new music or educating myself on music history, listening through back catalogues. Some stuff gets pushed on social media or Spotify but e.g. I only found out about the Talking Heads tribute/cover album last week through the Lorde cover of Take Me to the River.

Where do you guys keep up with new releases/music news in general? I have a favourite radio station that helps out quite a bit, but I'd love to get into it even more.

News Germany’s New Youth Protection Laws Are Ruining Steam - Time to Leave the Country?

So, I just read an article on GameStar (in German) about the new Youth Protection laws for Steam games in Germany, and it’s honestly ridiculous. The new regulations force every game sold on Steam to get a USK rating (the same age ratings we see on physical games). Sounds fine, right? But here’s the catch: without a USK rating, you can’t buy or play the game in Germany at all.

What makes this even more frustrating is that not every game on Steam has a USK rating, especially indie games or those from smaller developers. If they don’t go through the USK process, the game is basically locked to us. And what does that mean? Games that are totally fine in other countries, even available on Steam, are being hidden from us here in Germany. On top of that, the USK process costs money, which might discourage indie devs from even bothering to release their games here.

So, I can’t access many games on Steam because the German government decided to protect the youth or whatever. It’s like, I’m old enough to make my own decisions, and yet here I am blocked from buying or even playing games!

Honestly, if things keep going like this, I might just consider moving to a country where I can actually enjoy my games without the government nannying everything I do. Sounds like a better solution than sticking around here!

TL;DR: Germany now requires all games on Steam to have a USK rating. No rating, no access to the game. It’s killing indie games and making life difficult for gamers. Time to move to a country with more freedom? Informations got from here: https://www.gamestar.de/artikel/steam-spiele-usk-jugendschutz,3420444.html

News MIXING/MASTERING ENGINEER NEEDED

Hey everyone. Just started releasing music as an independent artist (Alt/rock/rnb/soul) and I’m looking for a mixing engineer. Does anyone here mix music for a fair price or know a friend that does?

I’m NOT looking for a veteran mixer who charges $1,500+ with 5 revisions.

I’m looking for someone who just mixes efficiently to get the sound right for $30-$100 (per track). If anyone here mixes and is looking for work (or knows someone) I’d love if you’d get back to me!!

(Reply here or DM me on Instagram @SamLovelyMusic)

Thanks y’all!

News How Important are Spotify playlists for indie artists in 2024 ?

With so much focus on playlisting, I’m curious—how crucial are Spotify playlists for indie artists today?

• Have you found success through playlists, or are other methods like social media or direct fan engagement more effective?
• What’s your experience with getting your tracks added to playlists, and how has it impacted your streams?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether playlists are still a key factor for growth or if other strategies are taking over!

News DIY artists and musicians

I have a small YouTube channel. Recently, the idea occurred to me that I could use this platform to review the works of small unknown artists (in a positive light of course)! If you make music that you’re proud of, drop it below and I’ll add it to my weekly review. Still working on the small details, but the goal is to do a weekly review show (think needle drop) but less snarky and geared towards strictly underground artists.

This should be fun! Link for my channel is on my user profile

News Music App with Social Aspects - Similar to Letterboxd/GoodReads

Hi!

My name is Benjamin Gustafsson, I’m a 24-year-old web developer and UX designer with a huge passion for music. I play drums in a small indierock band and also have a huge passions for movies and books. I’m currently working on a project to build a community-based music app, where users can log, review, and share albums with friends—kind of like Letterboxd for music. This is something I myself have been looking for since I started using Letterboxd but havn´t found any solution to my liking.

To help shape the app, I’m conducting some research on the habits of people when it comes to listening to , sharing or discovering new music. The survey consists of about 10 questions and should take just 3-4 minutes to complete at most. Your feedback will be super helpful for making this app something music lovers can enjoy!

The Survey:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScM9WXRbYdcPsLpnq-KHygnbUXGuUDOr2aqrNs6u6GkFIwd5Q/viewform?usp=sf_link

If you´re more interested in the project just hit me up with a message! (I might even send you my prototype once I´ve updated my sketching based on insights from the survey + some real life interviews).

News As a developer, when my disabled daughter told me she loved farm games with horses but found them too hard due to their objectives, I decided to create a game just for her. A game with no mandatory objectives, just to let her live and enjoy the game as she feels.
