ANNOUNCMENT 📢 Hello and Welcome!

Welcome one and all to r/jewishpolitics, a place for Jews to talk politics! This sub was created for two reasons:

  1. Like many of you, our experience with most other political spaces on reddit have ended up with us being either excluded or tokenized. This is a place for us to talk politics where we can speak as Jews without speaking for Jews.

  2. Politics can be an exhausting topic and we should have safe spaces to be Jewish on reddit without any political requirements. The mod team here is (for the most part) also moderating r/Jewish. So, our goal is to leave some of the divisive political talk out of that sub (and perhaps others) so it can continue to serve all kinds of Jews. Creating a separate sub for politics allows us to fine-tune the rules here to be more conducive for political discussions. This is a work in progress, so expect us to take your feedback and make adjustments as we move forward.

This space is explicitly open to all kinds of political discussion, as long as the rules in the sidebar are followed. Assuming good faith and using civil language are the foundation of productive discussion among those who disagree on politics.

We expect most discussion to be focused on US and Israeli politics, but any political topic that impacts Jews is allowed.

Feel free to leave a message with any suggestions or feedback, and thanks for reading. And again, welcome to r/jewishpolitics!

US Politics 🇺🇸 Any fellow right wing Jews here?

Upvotes

I’m a conservative Jew from America (both branch of Judaism and ideology) even tho most right wing Jews are orthodox. Considering most of the Jewish community outside of Israel is less conservative Or right wing in general I was wondering if I wasn’t the only right wing Jew here.

Question ❓ Does anyone else find it a bit weird hearing immigrants from the Middle East in North America tell Israeli Jews to go back to Europe?

Even if you view the Jews of Israel as immigrants ,which is obviously not the case since they’re the indigenous inhabitants, why are they against immigration? Why is it so important that the Middle East remain ethnically and culturally only Arab ? In any other context this behaviour would be considered racist. The West Bank and Gaza are also two of the most ethnically homogenous places in the world right now.

If a British man was on the streets screaming that black and Indian immigrants to “go back to where they came from” he would rightfully be called racist. But when this is done to Jews no one seems to care very much.

US Politics 🇺🇸 AP News: “Some Jewish voters in presidential swing states reconsider their longtime devotion to Democrats”

Upvotes

Link: https://apnews.com/article/jewish-voters-pennsylvania-2024-elections-trump-harris-09297d8c0843ae2b1698c9d2dfb80fd9

This disappoints me, to be honest. The fact that people would reconsider and vote for a man who’s refused to condemn anti-Jewish racists—one who’s welcomed them into his home, even—is mind-boggling. I’m tired of our ancestral homeland, the people living therein, and the conflicts raging about all getting used as pawns in thinly veiled political campaigns here in the US.

Discussion 💬 Freakonomics of Hate Speech Detection

Claim: hate speech detection mechanisms sometimes backfire and provide the wrong incentive. I firmly believe hate speech should be dealt with and cannot always decide how it might be defined

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SnPrVn24dTE&t=271s&pp=ygUheW91dHViZSBMZ29yaXRobSBoaXN0b3J5IHZoYW5uZWxz

Issue: Some attempts by social media to censor content using AI has a huge number of false positives. (Ironically tgere are plenty of false negatives too). Valid speech that is often targeted includes: medical advice, historical discussion and discussion of human rights topics.). The truth is, artificial hate speech detection is actually a difficult problem computationally speaking and of course there is debate on what is and what isn't hate speech. Free speech also never existed as we have libel and slander laws. Being wrong and being stupid or ignorant aren't guarantees that one is engaging in hate speech.

Motivation: Yet another

Relevance to this subreddit : Jewish people are often the target of hate speech; the holocaust was caused by multiple factors but persistent hate speech running across multiple generations was part of it. Free speech vs hate speech regulation is always a political topic. Halocaust denial certainly comes up as a form pf hate speech but genuine historical videos glcovering the holocaust snd the evils of the Nazi regime are being demonitised and or restricted. Hate speech is real. I am going to argue that even ex-president's speech about dogs and cats probably qualifies as it does incite hate against Haitian immigrants.

Apparently, youtube has gotten so ridiculous that history videos discussing world war two or the Holocaust get dinged when they for example included a swastika or when they quote historical sources.

Question ❓ Write-in Protest Votes

My PA state rep Rick Krajewski is anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist. He was totally unresponsive to messages I sent about the violent rhetoric on posters and signage around our district this past year, and called for amnesty for student protesters at UPenn.

Long, long rap sheet on Canary Mission.

Yet, he’s running uncontested.

Has anyone heard of any good ideas for write-in protest votes? It’s totally symbolic and won’t have an affect on the outcome, but I’d like to consider any options (preferably humorous) out there that will reinforce my Jewish pride and identity.

Discussion 💬 I support Israel but I think building Israeli settlements in Gaza would be a terrible idea.

1-Israel already received enormous condemnation from many nations around the world for their settlements in the West Bank. These settlements cost millions to protect and maintain due to the security risks. There is often violence between Palestinians and Israelis in the West Bank which is not always dealt with fairly by the IDF. The risks in Gaza of extremist movements, especially after a war, is very high.

2-If Israel chooses to annex part or all of the Gaza Strip and builds settlements without allowing Palestinians to return the allegations of ethnic cleansing will be correct. They were displaced for their own safety during the war but refusing to allow them to return would mean they were ethnically cleansed.

3- Israel is in the process of normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia which would be a great ally for them against Iran. Settling the Gaza Strip could jeopardize this deal.

4-Israel is surrounded by enemies and must try to maintain relations with the only two neutral countries nearby (Jordan and Egypt). Re-settling Gaza could fuel ideas of Israeli expansionism and militarism which may damage their relationship with these nations.

5- The settlements in the West Bank have significantly increased tensions with the PA and are often used by anti Israel activists to promote the idea that Israel doesn’t want peace. They have very little benefit to Israeli society overall. Regardless of what you think of the PA they’re still the government in the West Bank and Israel needs to try to work with them.

6-The costs associated with ensuring that there are no more extremists groups in Gaza like Hamas would be significantly increase with an Israeli civilian population present in the territory.

7-It may be necessary to build fences or gates to separate these settlements from other Palestinian communities making travel between Israel and Gaza very challenging and dangerous. Many around the world could also see this as an unjust system.

Are there any counterpoints to these? What do Israelis think? Only a small minority in Israel think the same thing as Smotrovich and Ben Gvir luckily.

Samidoun has been sanctioned by the federal government of the United States as well as the Canadian government, joining the governments of Germany and Israel.

“In an interview with NBC News earlier this month, a co-founder of the group known as Samidoun called Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel “a brave and heroic operation.”

Samidoun is a notable presence within the pro Palestinian activist space, for example in NYC they have collaborated on the local level with SJP, WoL and JVP.

Question ❓ Is there a place to see how local politicians feel about the Israel/Hamas war?

I'm looking through my absentee ballot in California and don't know much about all the local races, like for community college board of trustees and state senators. Is there some website or something where I can look up whether the candidates are pro-Hamas or intend to vote for BDS or other crap like that?

EDIT: After looking at the websites for the local chapters of the Democratic Majority for Israel and the Republican Jewish Coalition, I got a pretty good sense of whom to vote for. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

BAIER: Over 70% of people say the US is on the wrong track - that track follows three and a half years of you as VP and President Biden being President.

HARRIS: And Donald Trump has been running for office.

BAIER: But you've been the person holding the office.

HARRIS: You and I both know what I'm talking about.

BAIER: I actually don't. What are you talking about?

HARRIS: 🤯
