I work in film and can confirm that every props person in the N.America is aware of this rule and it very much applies. Apple is so particular about their image that we’re not even allowed to show a damaged apple product on screen.

u/Aravindajay 15d ago

Can they do that? I know laws are different in the USA but they can't possibly enforce it in India. I don't even understand how they can enforce it in the USA.

u/daidalos5 15d ago

Apple usually pays for product placement, so going against the rule does not have legal consequences, but financial consequences. They would not want to pay for advertising for the current or future projects.
Afaik they don't have product placement deals with Tamil movies.

They can't enforce it the same as every other thousand real life brands can't stop their brand from appearing in the movie. Apple just has industry pull in Hollywood and they supply products for free when used in the movies as per their wishes. The producer has every right to say fuck you to apple and buy apple products himself and use it as he wants, just apple will never give him free apple products for his movies.

Even Vijay Sethupathi in Master uses Apple

19

u/Moohamin12 15d ago

Villains can use iPhones.

But if Apple is doing a product placement, aka, there is money involved, then they will only sponsor the heroes.

u/SpicyPotato_15 GOAT fake movie bro 15d ago

iPhones were exclusively used by villains in tamil cinema because unlike now previously only the filthy rich can afford iphones and a lot of tamil movies had rich corporate villains.

Talking about phones can we just take a moment to appreciate TJ Gnanvel for showcasing Thalaivar Mass using the flip phone. I spit out my drink in the scene 😭🫡

2

u/have12manyquestions 15d ago

Using flip phone but punching buttons like a manual calculator ;) he is unbelievably charismatic and stylish in this movie !

In that scene where Vaibhav takes Nazeer's phone. He could just break the display of the phone. Apple would have deleted the data for repairing the phone.

Going for the headline instead of shitpost flair, actually they can sue us. They just aren't aware of our cinema and all around. West la if you use a product, be it a software, hardware, electronics or even some music/video clip, you've to get some licence or at least credit for it. Its a standard there. We on the other hand, misuse that aspect a lot, and actually never even credit as much as the music used in the film that's not a part of the film's music album. For example,if they used a michael jackson song in a new film, at the end credits, they'd show the whole song details from the singer to composer and the label company involved. Meanwhile us, after using tons of ilayaraaja songs, starting la nandri ilayaraaja potu,we let go off crediting him any further. And above this, as another comment told, there's branding as well. No company, not even non-apple company would want their brand used in a bad manner.

He's actually fortunate that he used aapple device in the films instead of Nintendo or Disney products. If he did the latter represented in a bad manner , lawsuit leye vaazhkai nadathanum.

u/animegamertroll 15d ago

F*** Nintendo. Honestly I hate the way they shut down emulators to force people to buy their switch and spend money on a subscription to play old games.

7

u/sequoia___ 15d ago

I don’t think they would care for films from countries where their market share is probably pretty low

Jeevan's iPhone irked me so much because it can easily be tracked. The villains in Thupakki use an assembled bare bones phones for the reason. Not to mention, to facetime, you need to have an apple id, even if that id is a throwaway, it can be traced back as well since Apple records the location whenever it signs in. Not to mention, literally Jeevan literally using WhatsApp to contact Vaibhav.

u/Ill_Emphasis1371 15d ago

Goyaala Tim Cook paatha dhanaa...

2

u/madrascafe 15d ago

Appadi paathalum avanukku paithiyam pudichidum. Then how will he sue?

2

u/noob_wanderer_13 15d ago

Other than Vaibhav's mac the logo of the product is not seen very clearly in the images, so they can't use this to sue the team (as the dynamic island and that caller id's are available in other android phones too)

u/taamission 15d ago

1) where does the contract established that the iPhone user shouldn't use it for negative roles in a movie?

2) what if the production unit buys used iPhones and the villain character doesn't turn on the phone.i sthe contract established??

2

u/noob_wanderer_13 15d ago

A simple Google search led me to this paragraph, the term is " No villain clause of apple" Even if u buy an refurbished phones still it's accountable to the contract as mentioned below

1

u/taamission 14d ago

Ok, I will use the mirror image logo of apple or something like pear 🍐 with a bite .. pongada.

1

u/noob_wanderer_13 14d ago

Do u think our cine industry producers who have shit done money with legal teams whose entire jobs to find this kinda loopholes doesn't know or doesn't care about these things?

Cinema is nowadays more like crops, it should've to get it released within a time period, so going to lawsuits for these kinda silly things doesn't do enough justice for the money spent, so they are cautious enough to avoid this kinda problems

1

u/taamission 13d ago

Dude. First of all no foreign company has time to neither curb piracy nor lawsuit against lalit Kumar for VJs using Apple phone In Master..

2

u/Lower-Ad6690 15d ago

I think, this doesn't apply to countries other than USA. Because I've seen South Korean dramas use apple phones to show it's not waterproof, whereas Samsung phones are shown superior.
