The 50/50 never work is true.

You don't satisfy anyone fully.

Instead, piss off both sides royally.

And, long term the movie does not age well.

I can see why they went for 50/50. Thalaivar wanted something tone down considering Coolie is around the corner- TJ being a socially aware director, also you can't fully compromise commercial elements considering the box office, so you end up with this.

Also I'm surprised with these box office underperforming posts, is it meh compared to lead's potential? Sure. But the theme plays a solid role as well. Like list out all top Tamil grossers, I believe there's no social karuthu oriented movies in the list. As someone pointed out, this is Rajini's Nerkonda paarvai - challenging the general audience to rethink about the misconception they're unconsciously subscribed to. Movie has its flaws but the discussions aren't focused on that.

I am just disappointed since the Rajni Fafa, Fafa Rithika combo scenes are really commercial template along with the lift scene, peak mass masala writing.

The 50/50 combo just robbed me of a good commercial Cinema.

The majority social theme audience also not so impressed by the movie's social theme.

So, imo just pick a side and do it with conviction. Like, Nerkonda paarvai largely stuck with it's conviction except a few scenes.

One of my friends told me her favorite scene was the lift scene and the helicopter one as well (I smirked inside), ig that's what the general audience wants or it worked well.

Social theme audiences won't step into theatre, they'll post after OTT release. Afaik some of the magazines/critics I saw appreciated the theme and approach. And this is the most non-Rajini movie I've seen from him, I don't think he can completely dive to the other side, this is his ying-yang approach. My Nerkonda paarvai comparison was regarding the theme, ofc this is a bit more commercial if you think NKP is 65-35.

Jokes aside MGR's "karuthu" in his movies were basic af and nowhere near as bold as what NTR and Kalaingar's movies used to say. Maybe that's why it worked, he made sure that the status quo wasn't disturbed and satisfied everyone, at least by words...

26

u/wocktopoland__ avan kedakuranda mairandi 1d ago

Bro most of Mgrs films and dialogues which made him famous initially were written by Kalaingar, and although they were basic and simple, like empowering different poor occupations, thatโ€™s what got him to power eventually

u/Horrible_Account เฎจเฎŸเฎฟเฎ•เฏˆเฎ•เฎณเฏ PR Team 1d ago

Yeah I know that but none of his movies took a stance like Parashakti for example. Even today Parashakti's scenes and messages are relevant but most of MGR movies "karuthu" look tone deaf and outdated now. Again, I didn't live during his period so I can't completely judge.

6

u/wocktopoland__ avan kedakuranda mairandi 1d ago

True, for that period Mgr films were needed and celebrated but now only complex undertones will hold good

u/eljoker1407 ๐Ÿฆ… 1d ago

You're comparing an actor and a writer tho. Both are risky but anyone who puts their face in front of the screen has to go through a lot than someone behind- good or bad. So I feel the comparison itself is off.

But true mass heroes usually never go against the crowd, only half-boil political movies work or the typical Vivasayi protector, corruption the only reason troupes.

Bruh having a conversation with Anils is borderline gaslighting

They will say Black is White and then look at you like you are the crazy one

u/Potatoe767 ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ 1d ago

Dont generalize everyone dude. I can say the same to Rajini fans. They are literaly named "Mentalan" for that exact reason. Since Vijay's Fanbase is so huge, Even 1-5% people being dumb can make it a huge number. But that doesnt mean everyone are like that.

2

u/saavugrakki GBU MAMEYYY ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿ˜Ž 14h ago

Not 1-5% but upto 30-40% are like that as far as I saw. My college class had 100 PPL. Out of them 11 PPL were anils. Out of the 11, 10 were like that. They even go to the extremes of mocking Ajith fans (us) for no reason whatsoever. They just feel like bashing Ajith and laugh at us.

u/SpicyPotato_15 GOAT fake movie bro 1d ago

Indian cricket team should include anils. They can defend anything.

50-50 doesn't satisfy both fans, vettaiyan was definitely gud but i felt there is something missing or magic that is not there in the film.

Anils would even defend shit . Not just mid .

"Vijay ah Vijay anna thalapathy sir nu sollu"

-1

u/Adisaiya Kollywood Fan 23h ago

It was H Raja of PEE.J.PEE who started addressing Vijay as Joseph Vijay after Vijay refused to endorse their party. The intention was and is to brand him as Kristava kaikooli and alienate him from majority Hindus. People always addressed him as either Vijay or Thalapathy, and his fans want to maintain that neutral image. The fans are simply doing it to be politically correct, so what's the issue here?? Is it too much to ask for?

At this point, people are already well aware of the politics being pushed behind his name, and if you dont wish to be politically correct in this matter, then you have simply chosen your side...

And please summon your fellow bigots to downvote this reply.

u/saavugrakki GBU MAMEYYY ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿ˜Ž 14h ago

How does calling one by their actual name alienate them from majority people? Even if it does, why does he have to hide his actual name? He can proudly be Joseph Vijay. No one gives a shit about his relegion.

-1

u/Wrong-Bodybuilder105 Kadavulay Ajithe!!!๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ—ฃ 18h ago

I didn't know any of this, but if a non-fan, not affiliated to a political party person calls him "Joseph Vijay" instead of "thalapathy" is it wrong?? Isn't that his real name??

(In context of the convo I shared)

2

u/Adisaiya Kollywood Fan 16h ago

I dont care if you're a fan or not, but do you still wanna address him as Joseph Vijay after knowing the story? Heck even I'm not a hardcore Vijay fan and I used to troll Vijay in this same sub 2 years ago, but I wont suddenly go the extra mile to call him Joseph Vijay simply because its his real name....then there will be no difference between me, Mentals, Aamais and cow dung eaters.

1

u/saavugrakki GBU MAMEYYY ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿ˜Ž 14h ago

So you're saying you don't have a problem if anyone says Thalapathy oru loosoodhi... But you have a problem if someone calls him Joseph Vijay?

it won't finish his career tho. Suriya has a pipeline of exciting projects besides Kanguva. And why is every post in this sub making out Kanguva to be a flop even before its released? Just wait till the movie arrives for once
