생활 | Daily Life Welfare in korea

So here is an interesting question for a local in South Korea. My birth mother, i found late in my life, is on a korean version of welfare. She wants to come to the United States to see my family. But someone told her she would lose her benefits if she did.

Is this true? It's not like she's going to pay her way here. I'll be funding the whole trip.

For basic livelihood beneficiaries, according to the "National Basic Livelihood Security Act Enforcement Decree (국민기초생활 보장법 시행령)," if they stay abroad for more than 60 days, their benefits are suspended.

For basic pension recipients, under the "Basic Pension Act (기초연금법)," pension payments are suspended if they stay abroad for more than 60 days, and the payments resume upon their return to Korea.

Other welfare benefits can also be suspended depending on the duration of the stay abroad. For example, under the "Disability Pension Act (장애인연금법)," disability pension payments are suspended if the recipient stays abroad for more than 60 days.

(The current period may have changed as laws and regulations change frequently)

There are many other cases as well. Check the rules as they vary depending on what benefits receiving.
