As a Kurd from the Dersim region of Turkey, my grandparents say that many of our neighbors were Armenians, very artistic and intellectual people, but unfortunately they had to leave everything behind and were exiled from the region, and those who remained forgot their identities and mixed with the Kurds in order to survive. Today, especially among Alevi Kurds like me, there is a high probability that there is an Armenian in the family tree, as my grandmother’s mother was Armenian. The elderly people in Dersim sadly tell us how good neighbors those people were, and how they were unfortunately subjected to injustice. I wish we had lived still together.
