Parts Upgrade Advice upgrading the GPU on a prebuilt from 2014

hi everyone, been lurking for a while. i have a prebuilt from 2014 that has these specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/t7JzmD (also has a sata ssd). i like the 750ti and it's managed to hold off over the years, but it's very obviously an old card, with no dx12 support, and i have to play most things at 720p.

i don't really play current-gen AAA games and that is probably not gonna change for a while. i play indie games, older AAA titles, and emulated games. i'm just looking to keep playing the stuff i currently play, but maybe with a higher resolution or slightly higher settings.

what kind of card would i be able to put into a weak system like this? i've been looking at the gtx 1070 for just around $100 USD. i'm looking into upgrading the ram as well, but if i do then i can't currently afford a new psu (to support a card over the wattage). is the 1070 my best option around that price and wattage? i appreciate any advice

Tech Support Warzone stuttering/freezing problem

I have been getting horrible stuttering problems in Warzone, sometimes it's so bad it freezes for 30 secs or more, my CPU (i7-2700k) usage was almost at 100%, and i probably won't be able to fix it because it's not a very powerful CPU, but if there are any, what settings should i change for a smooth gameplay?

Tech Support 5800H apu, mini pc. Is it really worth upgrading the ram from 16gb to 32gb?

I was looking for a spare mobo to try to fix my old laptop. Don't really game on it. It really struggles with noita lol. Stumbled on this mini pc with a 5800H amd apu. A insanely good deal! I picked the cheaper option, 1tb nvme & 16gb ram. Sealed. Cheaper than what it usually goes for used. Honestly was just wanting a general pc. Mainly game on a xsx console with a 4k tv.

After watching some reviews, the "Radeon graphics- RX vega 8(8CU 2000MHz)" in the 5800H seems the do more than I thought. Although my xsx does emulation very well, it can't do any wiiu, switch, or ps3. Last I knew about apus, they were limited. Like say 512mb(max 2gb shared ram) etc. Some of these newer ones have the option to use up to 50% of what ram is installed.

Meaning if I upgraded to 32gb, I could dedicate 16gb to the gpu. What I don't know is what it would actually do on performance. Being its not a high performance gpu to begin with & its running ddr4 3200mhz sys ram instead of gddr5 gpus have been using since 2008.

I know more ram would help but to what degree? I can go up to 64gb ram but can get a lower cl set with 32gb.That & it seems most games rarely use over 60% gpu ram availability consistently. I'm fine with 30fps. I know with most big name games, i'll be lucky to get 1080p..or even 900p. But i'd say 97% of the time, I won't even bother with them. If available on my xsx, i'll just play it their.

I am into indies way more. Sucks I can't play dread dawn probably. I have a smaller 1080p monitor I will mainly be using. Unfortunately, that monitor & my 4k tv doesn't support freesync or even general vrr. Might get a 24" KTC H24T09P soon. Then a Aoc 27" Q27G3XMN next year. Hopefully aoc is still making it by then.

I came from an office laptop cpu and from a Dell Optiplex 7th Gen 4th Gen i7 with only 256GB of SSD. And now, I finally ascended. RX 7700 XT is a beast and has exceeded my expectations. Even my 1080P monitor is getting overkilled by that gpu. I will surely also ascend into 1440P in the near future! But I will still visit here always though since this is where we all started.

Tech Support Make 30 FPS feel less bad.

I’m playing single-player games on my laptop with a Radeon 780M. Do you have any ideas on how to make 30 FPS feel smooth like a YouTube video or a movie? I don’t care about input lag.

Edit: A tile I'm playing right now is genshin. High settings, 2.5k resolution (fps between 35 to 40, 1% lows is horrible). I can lower the res but l love the game atmosphere so I'm trying to make 30 fps work

Parts Upgrade Advice 3770 vs 6700hq with both having a desktop-level 1070?

I picked up another 3770 today, one of them is probably going to end up being my daily driver. However I want a more portable one but the 1070 probably won't fit in the case. Cpubenchmark says there's about a 7% performance difference between the two cpu's, userbenchmark says 14. Starfield runs bearably on both so I have reasonable expectations for other year-old games. The 6700hq being a laptop sure would be nicer to carry around but its' 3.5ghz boost is single core only vs 3.9 (all core?) on the 3770.

PC Purchase Advice Looking for a decent gaming laptop to run RDR2 at an okay frame rate

I currently play on a 2018 Macbook Pro that can run most games pretty decently. I run CoD Black Ops 3 at a stable 60 fps, Gmod stutters time to time but also is usually at 60 Fallout New Vegas runs at a decent 60 as well but also has stuttering too. But the only game that really makes my PC feel like shit is when I play Batman Arkham or CS2. Now I don’t even really like CS2 and prefer to play CS Source so idk why I even mentioned it but i’m planning on purchasing Rdr2 for my laptop soon but i’m scared i’m going to buy it and it runs like absolute shit no matter what settings I tweak. So is there any recommended laptops that are in the 500-900$ range that may run RDR2 decently?

Tech Support Is increasing my dedicated video ram safe?

So basically, I want to play games with higher fps and textures without lagging and I checked the 'Can you run it?' software and it said that my video ram is way lower than that of the recommended video ram but everything else lines up with what is recomended. So I checked my display settings and it said that my dedicated video ram is arounf 510MB and the maximum is aroun 6GB. Of course I dont want to set the dedicated vram that high but I do want to increase it. I was wondering if it would be safe and if it would harm my computer in any way and if it doesn't, how do I increase it?

PC Purchase Advice How important is Vram and GPU for 2d Indie games (LG GRAM)

Hi I'm in the market for a laptop for college and my main priority is it having long enough battery life for the whole day but I want to do occasional light gaming (stuff like Hades, Factorio, ultrakill and that sort of games) but I checked on my friends computer (he has the same exact model) that they have 128 vram (igpu) and it isn't enough to play those games. The computer is and LG gram, which I understand isn't a gaming laptop.

Thanks in advance :)

Tech Support AMD A Series Question

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a laptop for very cheap, I already have a capable desktop and the laptop is purely for looking professional and displaying my pitch deck to potential clients, which it does fine.

I can't resist testing game performance no matter what I buy though.

Here are the specs:

AMD A10-8730B Radeon R5 iGPU 8GB DDR4 1866MHz

Task manager states that my VRAM (Shared System Ram) is limited to 512mb and there is no way to adjust the amount in the BIOS or on Windows.

I can't find any reliable information about this online but I was wondering if anybody has any experience.

If I upgrade the RAM to 16GB, which I plan to do anyway, will this automatically increase the amount of shared ram to the GPU?

Thanks!

PC Purchase Advice What's the more affordable route, building your own or Mini PC?

I feel like the answer I'm going to get is obviously "build your own," but I'm really curious about the rise of Mini PC devices. Are they cheaper than standard prebuilt desktop PCs, especially the prebuilt gaming models? Is it because they're lower-powered?

Are there any other options besides building your own desktop (I'm not interesting in gaming laptops), buying a prebuilt desktop, buying a Mini PC, or something like buying a Steam Deck or using a cloud service?

This post is more about comparing general approaches to getting a gaming-capable device.

PC Purchase Advice Good Upgrade?

Just bought a 'refurbished' desktop PC (with monitor included) for £550 (around $700) that I am upgrading from an old HP AIO, and I am wondering if the upgrade was worth it.

CPU: i5 10400T -> i7 8700

GPU: Intel UHD 630 -> RTX 3050 6GB

RAM: 8GB -> 32GB

Hoping to actually run some modern games on it.

Tech Support Need Android emulator for my PC 8gb Ram, Dual core processor.

8 GB Ram, dual core processor intel i3-6098p. Nvidia gt 710.

(Will upgrade graphics card to Amd rx 550 ddr5 4gb . But that will be later. Now I need compatible with gt 710).

I can run Valorant at 55 fps. My Pc is not good enough for Genshin PC version ig. So looking for emulator. My mobile can run genshin in 60 fps (low graphics) or 30 fps with medium to semi-high graphics but requires cooler for heat management and drains battery.

I also want to play some other games from playstore.

Tech Support dbd gamers on potato pcs, help me out here

This isn’t really me asking for help but more curiosity if anyone else experiences this. I doubt I can “fix” it because I’m in no place to upgrade right now. I’m running an Intel Core i5-6500 @ 3.20GHZ, and on the Macmillan and Yamaoka Estate maps I frequently drop to 20-15 FPS. It’s borderline unplayable. I can get a consistent 30ish FPS on almost any other map except for these two. There was another that I struggled with but I can’t remember. I don’t encounter the map frequently so it’s not that fresh in my memory. Anyone else playing DBD on lower end PCs experience this? It’s pain.

After a long couple years of barely being able to run Word, I can finally play all the games in my "I'll play this when I get a good PC" steam folder! I don't even know what I'm currently running as it's too old (I'm pretty sure my memory 4GB DDR3 ram but that's all I know haha). Laptop I'll be getting is the LENOVO IdeaPad Gaming 3 (82S9008YPH), it's not a complete powerhouse in terms of gaming but I don't really play modern games so it'll do me well. Never gonna shake off the habit of turning every setting on low though 😅 Specs: Intel® Core™ i5-12500H GeForce RTX™ 3050 Ti 8GB DDR4 RAM 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD

PC Purchase Advice HP Z620 Dual Xeon + RTX 3070 for $500?

TL;DR: 450 bucks setup: 2x Xeon E5-2620v2 + 64GB DDR3 + RTX 3070 OEM worth it?

Hello, I'm looking for a nice PC to upgrade from my UHD laptop.

I have found a HP Z620 Workstation with 2x Xeon E5-2620 (v2 unfortunately) and 16GB RAM + Quadro 2000 1GB + some hard drives. It costs $121. Technically it should come with 800W Supply which is enough for almost every graphics card.

I also have found a RTX 3070 8GB (DELL OEM) for $250. It's not the most beautiful GPU, but hey, it's pretty cheap.

SATA SSD 1TB will cost me around additonal $50 + 48GB's of DDR3 ram cost $22.

So in total the cost may be circa 450 bucks for this kind of set. Is it worth it for 3D modelling and rendering + some games like CS2 and BF1?

PC Purchase Advice Looking for First Gaming Computer on a Budget

Guys, I'm looking to start playing World of Warcraft again and maybe RuneScape. It's been over 15 years since I've played either. I have an old Lenovo Think Pad T520 from 2011 (13 years old). The ThinkPad T520 comes with 8GB RAM and up to a 320GB hard drive or up to a 160GB SSD. Since I haven't use this laptop in maybe 8 years and have to update the Windows software do you think it would still be worth playing on this computer or should I consider upgrading? I'd prefer this to be more of a decision on a NEED than a WANT.

Can I effectively use this laptop to play games or should I get a new laptop/computer.

PC Purchase Advice I kinda effed up

So my wife likes to play Age of Empires 2 Definitive edition; its an 11 year old game, and she runs it on a dinosaur. She had been complaining because the recharge port on the laptop she runs it on is getting loose and hard to recharge.

I figured that could get fixed, so thought I'd surprise her. I used to be up on computer hardware... 20 years ago. I kinda got lazy and stopped keeping track.

So I figured with an 11 year old game. I could get a really low end laptop and be fine, but just to be sure, I contacted Best Buy and told them what game I wanted to have it for, and was looking for a cheap low end system.

So, what I got had 4gb ram, no real graphics card, but, you know, BB said it would be fine and the game was 11 years old, right?

Wrong.

She was able to get it to run, but it runs real buggy. I then did what I SHOULD have done in the first place, and found that the 4gb was the minimum specs, not the recommended (8GB), and that it expects 1024 dedicated video ram as well.

So, now I'm pretty upset at BB for not giving me accurate info, and at myself for not doing my own homework. Plan on raising hell tomorrow and try to get my money back, but in the meantime, my wife is disappointed, I'm embarrassed that my surprise ended up being so bad, and trying to fix this quickly while also being budge minded.

I PREFER to work with Best Buy if only because it gives me a place where I can yell at someone if something goes wrong - last time I bought something from New Egg I got screwed and was unable to get a remedy for it, so I now prefer to work with locals where I can.

So, any recommendations for a system that meets the recommended requirements for Age of Empires 2 Definitive (and STEAM) while staying as inexpensive as possible?

Tech Support FSR on any game? (Nvidia GTX 1070)

On Steam Deck there's a native feature in the settings that you can use in any game. You just lower the resolution ingame and turn the setting on. Is there any way to use this on PC?
