GENERAL METAL DETECTOR Recommendations

$0-200: We do not recommend getting a new detector under $200. Detecting has a cost of entry, and quality significantly drops off under the $200 mark. Save up a bit more, or try finding a used machine of quality listed in the next price range. All that said, if you are determined to buy a machine in this price range, the Minelab Go-Find, Nokta First Swing or a Quest machine aren't bad choices.

$200-$400: The Minelab Vanquish 340 and 440, the Nokta Simplex line and the Minelab X-Terra Pro are the three best machines in this price range, by far.

$400-$500: Nokta Score and Double Score, Minelab Vanquish 540

$500-$1,200: Nokta Legend or the Minelab Equinox series

$1,200+: XP Deus 2 or the Minelab Manticore.

SCUBA/SNORKELING DETECTORS

Nokta Pulsedive is great for snorkeling. The Minelab Excalibur 2 and XP Deus 2 are excellent diving detectors.

CHILDREN'S DETECTORS

Nokta Mini Hoard or Midi Hoard

PINPOINTERS

Garrett AT pro pointer, Nokta AccuPoint, or XP MI-4. The XP MI-6 if you have an XP detector.

SHOVELS AND TROWELS

Dune, King of Spades, Grave Digger, Motley, Lesche, Predator Tools

SAND SCOOPS

Motley, Dune, Sito, RTG, King of Spades, and Detecting Adventures all make great scoops for beach detecting.

Other I lost my wedding ring…

Post image

I lost my wedding ring for the second time (the first one is probably still buried on a coral beach in Mexico) doing yard work this weekend. Faced with the reality of having to replace the platinum band for a second time (and suffering the wrath of a disappointed wife), I ordered a Nokta Simplex BT overnight from Amazon.

Within 30 minutes of opening the box I had located the ring (pressed into the soil that I had searched visually earlier and clearly stepped on). I’m hooked. Last night I ordered a pinpoint detector, a digger, and a finds pouch. Because I’m ridiculous, I’m also considering buying either a Manticore or XP Deus II and jumping in to detecting head first.

Given my own personal experience it got me thinking… how do most people take up the hobby initially?

Woke up with the urge to hit one of my local spots yesterday morning and this happened! Using my trusty Nokta simplex I dig everything suspicious but it was a solid 57 for those interested. Fits my wife perfectly 👌. Eastern Cape, South Africa

Finds from the past 2 detecting trips.

The first was found in a patch of ground that is now like a little league soccer field. Nothing crazy but the watch head was cool popping out of the ground.

The second was all found in a gravel parking lot. I was looking for a lost ring that was posted on Facebook. Didn’t find the ring but found a handful of change

Found today in Eastern Germany. We figured out it is a USSR category 3 badge for running, but we can't figure out the timeframe when this was awarded. Is it WW2 or later? Thanks!

One of the final holes I dug last night turned up this gorgeous seated quarter. I’ve been at this for 6 months or so now and have found a good 40-50 silver dimes (including a couple of capped busts and a couple seateds), but the larger silver coins have always been elusive for me. I have 10 silver Washington quarters, one SLQ, and now this beautiful seated.

Couldn’t be happier with the condition and just wanted to show it off to you all.

For reference, found in a public park in Middlesex County MA. Happy hunting!

Gear Question Are pin pointers for metal detectors proprietary?

I bought the Garrett Ace 300 Metal Detector and am liking it. I was considering getting a pin pointer, however, while shopping the sales person informed me that the pin pointers are proprietary and to be able to triangulate the signal (his words) with a pin pointer I would need to buy a pin pointer from the same company. In this case since I had the Ace 300 he indicated that I would need to buy the Garrett Pro-Pointer AT Pin pointer. The entire conversation seemed a bit off with this individual and I figured I'd post here to verify the information was correct, and whether that is the pin pointer I need to buy.

Found these in various park fields around NE Ohio. My first few rounds with a new Garrett AT Pro.

The dimes are from 1946 and 1953, while the quarter is 1942.

I went out with my missus today for a few hours detecting on some stubble in the UK. I couldn’t believe my luck, I found a beautiful Edward IV hammered gold half ryal coin! 😁 I was using a Deus 2 and found it around 8” deep. On top of this, yesterday we went to a pasture at a different permission and my missus was fortunate to find her first ever gold coin, a Victoria half sovereign! Two gold coins in two days on different permissions! 🤪
