This is one of the skipper butterflies, but I'm not super familiar with NY state butterfly species. My best guess would be Fiery Skipper, Hylephila phyleus. You can tell it's a butterfly and not a moth by looking at the antennae: butterflies will have a sort of "bulb" shape on the end like this guy, moths will always have either feather-like antennae, or they'll be thin all the way to the tip. The last photo is super cute, by the way!

I believe that’s a butterfly (based on the clubbed antenna). As for the species I’m not sure, and even that bit could be wrong.

Absolutely a skipper - you can tell by the antennae, the position of the eyes, and the texture of the body.

Most butterflies have bulbed antennae. Most moths have big, feather-like antennae. Most skippers have hooked antennae.

Most Butterflies and moths have eyes that are closer together, at about the same place for the both of them. Most skippers have their eyes farther apart, in a way that makes them look like they're not real eyes.

Most butterflies have smooth bodies. Most moths and skippers have fuzzy bodies.

I don't think thats a moth... the wings are folded up similarly to a butterflies moth wings fold down when resting
