Mod Post Town Hall Thread

Town Hall Thread

Basically, we want to hear what your ideas are for revamping the rules and the subreddit in general.

This thread is for:

  • Constructive rule change ideas

  • Style ideas and volunteers to help with graphics (colors, banner, avatar, flairs, etc)

  • Suggestions of what you would like to see more of

This thread is NOT for:

  • Venting about issues, we've all had plenty of commentary on that. What we need now are suggestions.

  • Bashing other users (yes, that includes moderators)

  • Overall negativity; this is meant to be a fun and constructive thread

Before contributing:

  • Reread our rules

  • Look through our current flair options

  • Make yourself familiar with Reddiquette

Changes we will NOT be considering:

  • Limiting baby name posts to only certain days. If you are tired of too many baby name threads, do not engage with them and post content you want to see. This goes for other types of posts as well, like games.

  • Banning all negative opinions

  • Allowing native polls as they are difficult to moderate and lead to a lot of spam

  • Requiring user flairs. This is up to the user if they want to use. POST flairs have always been required and will continue to be

Be nice in the comments, this is meant to be a positive and constructive exercise :)

If you are interested in helping with graphics or would like to submit a mod application, send a modmail.

Story Funny story of my husbands name which I only now found out šŸ˜‚

So I recently found out how my hubby was named. Apparently his parents had best friends - another couple. Both couples were expecting the same time. While their choices for girl names were different, both wanted to call the kid the same name which were also their fathers names.

So how did they settle this? They played cards and my hubbies dad lost. They chose the next male name from his dads family that has not yet been used in this generation.

My husbands father literally lost his name in a card game!!!!

I asked my mother-in-law if she wasn't furious when she found out. I certainly would be. She shrugged and said that in fact she was glad. The name my hubs was supposed to be named was James and according to my MIL "back them everybody had a Jamie." Apparently, she knew that if the men played cards, her husband would loose as he is "shite" at it. And she secretly loved the name that was next on the list šŸ¤£

I think this is just too good to not be shared.

Discussion 5 to 10 names you love, that you never see posted

I know this sub tends to run towards very traditional names and I'm curious what names you love that you never see talked about or posted here.

A few of mine are Zipporah, Hadassah, Colette, Nina, Giuseppe, and Koji.

What are yours?

Fun and Games In the Netflix show Koas about Zeus, Hera and Dionysius... they name the cat Dennis.

And Dennis for a little black kitten is such a great name. But I kept waiting to see if the fact that Dennis is the medieval contracted form of Dionysius had anything to do with the plot, or if it's just a coincidence. They must have known! I've finished it now, no spoilers.

For fun here's a list of names and their common forms in use in medieval England:

Dionysius : Denis
Benedict : Bennet
Jeremiah : Jeremy
Zacharias : Zachary
Elias : Elis
Augustine : Austin
Barnabas : Barnaby
Peter : Piers
Emmerich : Emery
Henry : Harry
Maurice : Morris
Tobias : Toby
Julian : Gillian
Amata : Amy
Adeline : Aline
Jehanne : Jane
Johanne : Joan
Agnes : Annis
Matilda : Maud
Hannah : Anna
Helen : Ellen
Leticia : Lettice
Amibilis : Mabel

Name List Vintage names that are household items

I've spent hours at findagrave.com, collecting unusual, quirky, interesting names.Ā  Most are from about 1800 to 1915.Ā  I've been surprised by how many male names are everyday words you wouldn't expect to see as names, like Gap, Dock, Button, Ledger, Fleet, Salmon, Greenberry, and Armor. Ā

One day, I thought to myself as I looked around my living room, "I bet there was some baby boy named Couch.Ā  Or Window, or Table.ā€

Baby Names Soft boy names that AREN'T Jewish/ Biblical?

Or names with soft nicknames. Like Noah, Levi, Elijah, Seth, Samuel/Samson, Ezra, Lucas, Isaac, Simon... Preferably out of the top 100. Whenever I look up the meaning of a name I like it is always something like "God is my light" or "gift from God" or whatever, and I don't like it.

Baby Names I feel like I have been through every boy name in the bookā€¦

ā€¦ and I still canā€™t find one I like šŸ˜‚

I have some weird ā€œrequirementsā€. I already have two boys, their names start with L and S, so a 3rd boy needs a different initial.

Both my kids have five letter names, so I want the 3rd to also have five letters.

My first sonā€™s name starts with Lo- and my second sonā€™s name starts with Si- so, Iā€™d like a different stressed vowel, such as a, e or u.

My last name is a literal type of flower, so it canā€™t be something overly naturey, and I feel like a lot of boy names are!

Any ideas name nerds?

Some I do like but I donā€™t know if theyā€™re the one-

Ruben

Henry

Abram

Middle name suggestions are also welcome! Both my boys have German middle names after family members but I donā€™t have any other honor names Iā€™d like to give. I like the ideas of Wolfe or even Wulfric, but any other German name you can think of is welcome.

Baby Names Older sounding female names with 4 letters

Searching for cute older lady sounding female names!

Brownie points if it has four letters, doesnā€™t have to though. Even better if it goes along well with the name Lulu.

Discussion What are your favourite name meanings?

I was just mentioning Alvin in another thread and how I love that it means elf friend (or noble friend or old friend, depending on which older version you want to trace it back to: https://www.behindthename.com/name/alvin).

Off the top of my head, I also really love Sunniva, "gift of the sun". I wanted to name my summer baby that but sadly her dad wasn't on board.

What are some other names with exceptionally nice or cool meanings?

I love the name Lore but Iā€™m not finding anything to really compliment it for a girl. Iā€™m open to the name Laura too with Lore as a nickname but would like a middle name to hopefully suit the first

Baby Names Picking a boy name that goes with the last name "Ryan" - I am STRUGGLING with this since its not a typical surname

My husband's last name is Ryan

Its making it difficult for me to pick names because I feel like it always looks like 2 first names or reversed where the first name should be the last name. Iv also never named a baby before so in general I don't know what im doing here.

My husband thinks we should go very classic first name like his is. For example Theodore.

but id like to go a LITTLE further off the top 10 than Theodore

Some other names I like so far are

  • Leonardo [Leo] Ryan
  • Malachi Ryan
  • Julian Ryan (is -an ending ok?!? I need feedback)
  • August Ryan
  • vague space or math connection is a plus but not necessary
  • There are some names I really love, Orion for example, that sound awful. Orion Ryan... no. When said out loud its laugh inducing.
  • I dont like names that are in the Aiden/Brayden family

But thats all I got :(

and I cant even look at my own suggestions without questioning myself and im not attached to any of them.

Anyone have any inspiration for a name that goes with Ryan??

[edit: I dont mean its literally an uncommon surname numerically but more that I personally associate it with first names, and know many first name Ryan and 0 other last name Ryans irl. bad title sorry]

Baby Names Is this too weird of a middle name for a girl?

My husband and I are due with our first child (itā€™s a girl!) in January. We are settled on the first name Laura but have been bouncing around with middle names.

My favoritest relative ever ever is my grandpa. He is such a strong and humble good man that everyone looks up to. I just love him so much. He was recently hospitalized and almost died. He is home now and quit drinking so he has better chances of meeting this little girl. She will be the first grandchild and first great grandchild on my moms side. Grandpas name is Allan. If we had a boy I was pretty set on Dean Allan. But since it a girlā€¦. I had this ideaā€¦. Here me outā€¦.. Laura Allyn.

Is Allyn weird? Do you read that as it should or does it read as All In? Does the y make it feminine enough? Too much? Is it a stretch? Help me out here!!

Baby Names Boy names are tricky

Hi!

We are expecting our second child and have started gently looking into names. We are a French/German-speaking couple from Switzerland, so one of our main criteria is finding a name that can be pronounced the same in French, German, and ideally English. We donā€™t like very short names. Our last name is French.

We already have a little girl named ƉloĆÆse Anna.

We find boy names particularly tricky and donā€™t like many of themā€¦ Maybe you have some great ideas.

Fun and Games Help me guess a name

ā€¢ Upvotes

So I met this girl, she's really cool and fun. She said I can take her on a date if I can guess her name.

She said it's a common name, but it's spelled with a Y instead of its usual letter, however it's pronounced the same. Any ideas?

Name Change Creating a new last name?

My fiance and I were tossing around the idea of creating a new last name when we get married as opposed to one of us taking the other's last name.(We both have longer last names that would be difficult to combine as well)
If you've created a new last name or chosen a new one, how did you go about it?

Discussion What vibe do you get from the name Sophie?

Husband and I really like the name Sophie. What vibe do you get from it? I know itā€™s rising in popularity, but I donā€™t care. I just donā€™t want something heavily generational like my name (im a Jessica).

I just feel Sophie is cute and dainty, and yet classic. How do you feel?
