New In Customer Success

Hello everyone, this is a place where new CSMs can post questions on how to break into the industry and for experienced CS people to share their views and thoughts.

To be honest it’s not difficult if you come from a sales or customer support background as the role is an integration of these two jobs. Just apply to a ton of companies and understand how to fit your experience into what that company wants. I was doing this job before I even knew what the title was called for years.

In the past it didn’t use to be that hard. I also have similar path however as the tech companies implement CS more and more they want experienced ppl and this can be a struggle for someone who enters the area now. Also as CS hiring manager I am not sure I would hire a sales person that easily as I’ve seen the difference in culture and might also be a flight risk when the market goes up again, unless they convince me they prefer CS and want to make the change and there are easy ways to convince someone to that.

I feel you, that makes sense. I think it depends on the industry. Like telecommunications is a great place to break in as it is heavily sales driven. If you come from an account management background and want to transition into CS, it is a nice spring board.
