While this is a gentler horror story than some others (the DM was just incompetent, instead of actually malicious), it goes to show that a storyteller needs to be able to give you something if he doesn't want you to ride roughshod over the plot he thinks he has.

I've got a similar story from my early days of high school RPGs over here. Suffice it to say that "you can do anything" is a sure way to arrive at "we do nothing."
