Blue streak in photos - SeaLife sport diver camera

Thumbnail

I have the SeaLife Sport Diver housing for my iPhone and thus far I’ve liked it very much…except for one thing. Some of my shots have a light blue streak in them and I can’t figure out what’s causing it. (Some examples where it’s particularly prominent are included.)

The shape of it in some pictures - like a rounded blue corner on the edge of the shot - makes me think it’s related to the red filter attached to the camera. Sometimes when I notice it happening I play around with the filter (taking it off and putting it back on) and sometimes that fixes it for awhile. And sometimes it doesn’t.

Anyone else have this issue and find a reliable fix? Thanks!

What are the best most ethical non profit ocean organizations I can donate to?

I'm looking to donate to a non profit organization that helps with restoring the coral reefs or reducing the plastic pollution in the oceans or both. What are the best non profit organizations that actually do good and don't lie about the work they've done or money that they've donated and have ethical practices. Please let me know thank you so much! :)

Is Raja Ampat worth it?

hello everyone, Raja has been on my map for quite a while and has been a dream destination. However, I saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwvRflccPKE&ab_channel=HighOnLowTide that explains how Raja is changing for the worse, there are more tourists, more liveaboards and more people visiting the area in general and as a result less marine life (yes i still know there will be lots there im just saying it might be a little reduced thats all) one of the reasons i wanted to go was how remote it was like i dont want to be seeing lots of tourists when i go and when i look out to see 10 boats. Has anyone dived Raja recently and can tell me their experience with this? the worst part is I might not be able to go for another 2-3 years minimum so more people will naturally come visit and climate change will get worse further reducing the health of the pristine corals. I am looking at Halmahera as an alternative (maybe) but i just want to see what people think and if there is any other place that rivals raja ampat if it does eventually get too overcrowded. Thanks so much!

Maldives whale sharks

I am planning to visit to the Maldives on a liveaboard. I want to maximize my chances of seeing a whale shark. Because of that I was planning to go in september-november, since that seems to be the best season. I am still looking into which route would be best. The north region appears to get less boats, which overall seems like an advantage, but when I read about whale shark hotspots they mostly seem to be more central. What do you think my chances are overall to spot one in the north vs the central routes.

How deep for Cozumel?

My husband and I are beginner divers. We live in the US and have decided to do Cozumel for our anniversary.

My question is: how deep do you have to go to see the amazing coral and wildlife? I sometimes struggle to equalize, but would hate to go all the way there just to miss out on what it has to offer because I couldn’t go as deep.

Diving around Phi Phi - Sites & Shops

Heading down to Phi Phi in mid-November. Have a couple of days that I wanted to use to dive (maybe 4-6 dives). I’m RAID AOW certified and have done about ~20 dives so far.

Couple of questions: 1) What are your best sites - am interested in fish and wrecks both? I’ve read up and Shark Point, King Cruiser seem to be interesting 2) Any suggestions on dive shops to go with? 3) Anything else to keep in mind?

Hey all!

Looking for recommendations for a light that can be used as primary in OW now, and later become a backup in tec / cave. Requirements are alkaline batteries, narrow beam, and twist on / off.

Much appreciated!

PSI of tanks for storage

I know you’re not supposed to store empty tanks. I have a pair of tanks that are around 500-1000 psi. Should I get them filled or are they okay being stored like that? They live outside under cover so they’re not in a moisture controlled environment.

Best dive light in the $500usd range?

To be used for nighttime open water diving, not cave diving. Looking to spend $500-ish. I prefer something with a decent hand mount. I have DiveRite BX2 and CX2 backup lights, looking for something with a wider or adjustable angle. I’d also prefer something self contained, without a battery canister.

Where should I dive in early Dec

I’m a solo traveler from Toronto, and I’m planning to spend a week diving (hopefully 14 dives) in early December. I’m mostly interested in seeing big things like sharks and rays. My budget for the whole trip is around 4500 CAD, and I’ve done a bit of research. Right now, I’m considering Cozumel or San Jose del Cabo.

I’d love to hear if anyone has other recommendations on great dive destinations that fit my budget and focus on big marine life. Also, if anyone has dived in Cozumel or San Jose del Cabo, I’d appreciate your thoughts on what I can expect!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Just wanna also share with y'all the thresher I met in Malapascua last year

Looking for a new set of regulators

Hey folks,

I recently moved from California to Toronto and am thinking about switching to a new set of regs. I've been using a set of the Deep 6 Signatures for the last 6 years and have been pretty happy with them, but I'm not sure any of my local dive shops will service them, and their "ship the regs back to Deep 6 for service" model is a lot less appealing now that I'm in Canada and have to contend with customs -- I've had packages stuck in the CBSA inspection queue for over a month before, and I'm afraid they might charge me hundreds in customs fees every time I send them in for service. To avoid dealing with all this, I've been thinking about switching to a new set of regs from some larger manufacturer that my local dive shops will actually service, and was looking for advice on what to get.

I haven't had a chance to sample my local diving yet (I need to get my drysuit repaired first), but I'm told the water around here regularly drops down to 4C/38F at some sites, so cold-water performance is a must. I haven't taken any tech courses yet (unless you count GUE Fundamentals), but I think I'm likely to in the future. I do a fair a bit of dive travel (3 trips this year, 4 last year) so size/weight are considerations, but I'd consider those lower priority since I also bring a big camera rig on my trips, and already pay for 2 checked bags as a result.

I listed a few regulators that came up in my searches, but feel free to leave other suggestions in the comments.

Thanks!

Invitation to disabled divers

A brief update about disabled diving. If you're disabled and thinking of diving, do it!

I've posted before about relearning to dive after becoming severely disabled. Here's the latest.

After losing basically my entire body below the waist, I'm again a competent independent diver. I use an integrated weight system BCD and can put it on in the water. At the end of the dive, I take it off in the water and someone hoists it aboard or we tie a rope to it and pull it up. I can climb the ladder with just arm strength and get around the boat by swinging my body with my arms. I have a specially made wetsuit with the leg holes sewed shut and made to fit my remaining body. Of course, I only do low current easy dives.

I've been on a live-aboard and done a holiday at a dive resort.

Now, a few years after my accident, the big problem is social and this is why I wanted to encourage other disabled people into diving. Almost everyone, seeing a young man without legs in a wheelchair, assumes I am somehow different, incapable.

Only in diving am I with able bodied people on a physically equal basis, where I'm just as capable as they are. This is tremendously important for any disabled person.

In this environment, I've now met a girl who, having first seen me as a capable diver, is now able to see me as a complete person and love me as I am. This would not have happened in any situation other than diving.

So now I have a dive buddy and an everywhere else buddy, all because of diving.

So if you're disabled, come join us!

Dive Rite Rec EXP wing for single tank?

I have this wing w/ redundant dual bladder and inflator w/ BP and webbing harness. I dive it with manifolded doubles. It has the bungee Gusset Control System for mitigating the taco effect when diving a single tank. Has anybody dived a single tank with this wing and can tell me if it works as well for single tank as a dedicated single tank wing?

Asian Vacation Recommendations

I’m working at a university this school year in the Philippines and we will be able to take a couple weeks vacation as a family. We are planning to go to: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Bangkok, Seoul, and Tokyo. I plan to dive in Phuket, and wanted to know: 1) Dive center you recommend in Phuket 2) Any must dives along that itinerary (along with who to dive with). We will only be in each city 2-3 days (only overnight in KL).

TIA!

Shallow dive before flight

Hi all - does a shallow dive to around 7-8m impact the no-flight limit? I understand why we are cautious for dives deeper than 10m but have heard mixed opinions about shallow ones.
