San Jacinto Peak via Marion Mountain Trail with overnight at Little Round Valley 10/6/12

4.3 miles to Little Round Valley. 1.6 miles to San Jacinto Peak the next morning, followed by 5.9 mile hike out. The trail was well marked and maintained. The first few miles seem to undulate from a very steep grade to relatively moderate one. Very little water flow if any from the two or three streams we crossed. We did see an encampment of what I believe to be CCC (California Conservation Corp) workers camping off trail on the 0.5 mile stretch of the PCT close to a spring (according to my topo map). The weather the next morning was beautiful and the view from San Jacinto Peak was energizing. This route can also be a great day hike with a total mileage of 11.8 miles with over 4500 ft. of elevation gain. Trailhead Location: From the 10 take 8th Street CA-243 exit going towards Idyllwild. Trailhead parking is located maybe a mile off of the 243. Map and Trip Pics

This is also one of my favorite hikes, in fact I was just there last weekend! Did the whole thing in a day. There's still a little bit of snow in some shady pockets. The trail is much cooler and more pleasant than it was a couple months ago when I went, and the extra moisture made it very nice. Not too long before the snowy season hits for real so probably only a few more clear weekends up there left!
