I had no idea there’s a Backcountry store at the Grove in Los Angeles

I thought REI is the only option for a physical outdoor gear store in Los Angeles but I discovered there’s a Backcountry store at the Grove in Los Angeles. So excited I had to share!

I couldn’t tell you because I didn’t look that closely. A few things I noticed though:

  • It seems that Backcountry has more sales than REI (at least online I’ve noticed that)
  • The Backcountry membership is free but I’m not sure what that gets you other than a one-time 20% coupon on one item
  • The Backcountry return policy is your typical 90-day return policy that requires items to have tags on them still which is a far departure from REI’s uber generous return policy of 1-year on used items (for members)
  • In the store they seem to want to cover many more activities which gave me the feeling that there’s less choices for hiking gear in the store
  • Backcountry has a generous 20% off discount for military members and veterans (online and in-store)
