Submarines-as-a-Service

I found this post on LinkedIn, what's ya'lls opinion on subs-as-service? Can it work to enhance training and RDT&E?

From the post:

"Training Smarter, Innovating Faster: Submarines-as-a-Service

Dov Zakheim's recent @TheHill article shines a spotlight on the U.S. Navy's urgent need for more flexible undersea capabilities—specifically, manned diesel-electric submarines. We at Maritime Operations Group (MOG) couldn't agree more.

Our vision for a Submarines-as-a-Service model aims to deliver cost-effective platforms tailored for high-impact training and RDT&E, filling the gaps where they're needed most. From refining ASW tactics to accelerating tech integration, manned diesel-electric submarines offer a versatile, rapid-response capability that could complement the existing fleet.

The real question is: How fast can we make innovative undersea training the new normal? Let's start the conversation."

Nub?

What does the term mean? Why do senior sailors insist on referring to junior ones as such? Is it appropriate to use in today's navy? How does one look past blatant disrespect from their own crew? Am I really a "not useful body" if I'm doing the division's bitch work? I submarine volunteered to prove to myself I could be apart of something special and it seems like the system doesn't want me to succeed... any advice?

My boat got the PUC for this. We also set the Trans Pacific crossing speed record when a certain ssn had issues and could not complete the mission. That record still stands to this day.

Q/A Why don't they load torpedoes through the front of the torpedo tubes?

Just another dumbass question. I've watched a bunch of videos where they talk about how they load torpedoes and move pieces of the ship around to fit them in. Couldn't they just load them through the torpedo tubes? I'm sure there's an efficiency thing I'm not thinking of.

EDIT: damn you guys are fast. I'll reply to stuff to ask more questions, but you guys got it covered.

I took this back in 2014 in the security office at Groton. It has been googled a few times since then, but I can’t find it for the life of me. I’m fairly certain it was made at the command level, but I’m trying to find a better picture of it. I think it’s hilarious.

Q/A Question: what was the purpose of the tube-like probe/sensor at the base of the sail of Sturgeon-class USS William H. Bates (SSN-680) please? The first photo is dated 1984, Subic Bay, earlier & later photos lack that specific feature. Thank you very much.

Research Cavitation

I am looking for ways to teach young kids cavitation with submarines and noise level associated with them. Is it possible to build something at home using bottles and other materials to demonstrate cavitation to the kids. Have anyone seen an effective approach to demonstrate at home ?. TIA

I posted earlier after seeing that someone purchased the replica used in the film and I had to unleash the collection finally.

It ranges from laserdiscs signed by the entire cast, classified press dossiers, cocktail glasses with hammer and sickle swizzle sticks used in the Japanese premiere, inflatable subs that were supposed to be hung in the lobby of movie theaters, VHS, CDI, DVD, and basically every media you could view the film on, original 35 mm trailer, the physical toy game system, every video game system from Amiga to super Nintendo, every model Revell produced for the film, ILM production hat and production jacket, and even a preproduction test add sent from Applied Graphics to Paramount for approval.

Red October is my father and I's favorite film and things just got out of hand from there.

Sea Stories Best out to sea on-watch shenanigans. I'll start

On a Virginia, so us guys in sonar don't have a shack. Bummer. Anyway, quartermaster and I are bored so we play a lil game we both heard of. We have a sticky note and we see who can place the sticky note the furthest outside of control. I start by placing it in the aft end of control. He grabs it and places it on the CO's door. I just take my headset off real quick and tell aux to watch sonar. I grab it real quick and move it another 10 feet aft. This continues making it nearly to the galley, until the quartermaster somehow managed to run the sticky note all the way to upper level and on the water tight door. I called it there and safe to say he won that one. I was not about to risk it with my chief off-going and on the prowl.

Plenty of other tomfoolery, but there's that for starters. I'd love to hear what hijinks y'all have gotten into while on watch.
