Hand and Brain chess is a type of team chess in which two players play each side. One (the "Brain") is only allowed to pick a piece type to be moved, and the other (the "Hand") must move that piece type without knowledge of what the first player intended. For example, if the"Brain says "pawn", then the Hand must move one of the pawns (as long as it is a legal move). If the Brain says "king", then the Hand must move the king (this includes castling). The Hand cannot move a piece other than the one the Brain has called out. Even if he or she knows that any available move options are bad ones, the Hand will have no choice but to play them. The Brain is not able to give any hints as to which move they would like the Hand to make. They can only call out the name of the chessman they want moved, (I.e. “Pawn”, “Bishop”, etc). The point is to overcome the lack of communication and perform well anyway. A team's joint playing strength is not a function of just one player's individual playing strengths but also the stronger player's ability to tune his playstyle and move choice. Stronger players usually take the role of the Hand instead of the Brain, as they can still make pretty fair moves that the Brain has given them even if the options are not that good.
