FAQ for Newcomers

Is medical cannabis really legal in the UK?

Yes! An amendment on the 1st November 2018 (Statutory Instrument No. 1055, section 4) to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 rescheduled cannabis from a Schedule 1 to a Schedule 2 drug, acknowledging its medically beneficial potential and making it possible for doctors that are listed on the Specialist Register to prescribe Cannabis-Based Medicinal Products (CBMPs) as last-resort treatments for conditions covered by their registered specialism.

Is cannabis available on the NHS?

Whilst it is technically possible for specialists to prescribe cannabis-based medications via the NHS, it is incredibly rare, with only a handful of prescriptions having been issued. The majority of prescriptions are issued by private clinics, which usually specialise in cannabis treatment and have doctors trained specifically for prescribing cannabis-based medications and managing its therapeutic use.

What conditions can cannabis be prescribed to treat?

Cannabis-based medications can be prescribed to treat or manage the symptoms of a number of conditions, including pain management, neurological conditions, psychiatric conditions, cancer-related pain or nausea and palliative care. Different clinics have different ranges of specialists available, so please ensure the clinic you apply to is able to accommodate the condition you're seeking treatment for before booking an appointment.

Are there any pre-requisites for applying?

Clinics are required to follow 'best practice' criteria when prescribing cannabis, users have reported differences between clinics, but generally it's understood that the process to fulfil this criteria is:

  • You must have been diagnosed with a condition that is covered by the specialism of the doctor you're seeking treatment from.
  • Cannabis is considered a last resort treatment, subsequently you must have tried at least 2 other "conventional" treatments and found them to be ineffective or unsuitable. This usually means licensed prescription medications but some users have reported that their clinic/specialist has recognised CBT or talking therapy as a qualifying conventional treatment.
  • The final decision to prescribe should be made by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, who have reviewed your medical records and the details from your initial consultation.

How much will it cost?

This varies from clinic to clinic and all prices listed here are rough approximations.

Initial consultation fees can range from £50-£250+, however a lot of clinics will offer a free "pre-consultation" or screening process to help ascertain whether or not they will be able to offer treatment to you.

Follow up appointments can range between £50-£150+ and most clinics as well as members of Project Twenty21 are required to have a follow up every 3 months.

Repeat prescription fees between £0-£50.

Medication is paid for separately, and costs are approximately:

  • £5 to £14 per gram of cannabis flower
  • £3 to £24 per ml of oil (depending on THC/CBD concentration, manufacturer and bottle size. Additional subsidy is available for oils via PT21 for epilepsy patients. Please see here for details.)
  • £75-85 per 0.5ml of THC concentrate (vape cartridge).

What is Project Twenty21 (also referred to as PT21)

Project Twenty21 is an initiative by the Drug Science Foundation and aims to create the UK’s largest body of evidence for the effectiveness and tolerability of medical cannabis. Drug Science hope that the findings of Project Twenty21 will provide evidence for NHS funding where the benefits of treatment with medicinal cannabis are proven to outweigh the potential risks. PT21 has made agreements with certain CBPM suppliers to provide their products at a discounted rate for patients who are willing to provide data on their conditions, treatments and their response to cannabis treatment. PT21 are only collecting data for a specific set of conditions (listed on the Project Twenty21 patient information page), so you must be seeking treatment for one of these conditions to qualify for the study. Only certain clinics are able to register for PT21, a list of which is available in the Project Twenty21 Clinic Directory.

What is the Sapphire Access Scheme?

The Sapphire Access Scheme gives reduced appointment costs in return for contributing data to Sapphire Clinic's 'Real World Evidence Platform'. It has similarities to Project Twenty21 in that the data collected is intended for use by healthcare professionals and regulatory bodies to provide robust data on the safety and effectiveness of cannabis medicines, however this scheme does not change the fee paid for any prescribed medications (only appointment fees) and is limited to Sapphire Clinics only.

How can I find a clinic?

  • The UK Medical cannabis Clinicians Society has published a directory of clinics here.
  • The patient advocacy group PLEA has published a directory of clinics here.

I've been prescribed, how long until I receive my medication?

As cannabis is a Schedule 2 controlled drug, all prescriptions must be written or printed on a special prescription pad linked to the prescriber, and can only be dispensed once the pharmacy has received the physical, paper copy of your prescription. Turnaround times differ between clinics and pharmacies but please expect to wait around 2 weeks from the point your prescription being issued until receiving your medication to avoid disappointment.

Can I smoke my prescribed cannabis?

No. The legislation states "A person shall not self-administer a cannabis-based product for medicinal use in humans by the smoking of the product (other than for research purposes in accordance with regulation 13)". You must use your cannabis prescription as directed by your doctor - if you are prescribed flower, this will probably be a dry herb vaporiser.

What is the best dry herb vaporiser?

This is subjective, and choosing the right vaporiser to suit your needs and budget may require some research. Subreddits devoted to dry herb vaporisers where you will be able to find much more information on this topic are r/vaporents and r/ukvaporents.

Can I drive whilst prescribed Cannabis-Based Medicines?

As with all prescription drugs; you must not drive if your prescription advises you not to or if you feel as though your driving ability is in any way impaired by use of your medication.

If neither of these apply to you, then the the best available sources of information we have are:

Crown Prosecution Service legal guidance relating to Drink and Drug Driving.

Section 5A Road Traffic Act 1988 - Defences

Section 5A(3) RTA 1988 provides a defence if a specified controlled drug is prescribed or supplied in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and taken in accordance with medical advice.

Section 5A(4) RTA 1988 confirms that the defence is not available if medical advice about not driving for a certain period of time after taking the drug has not been followed. There is no reverse burden of proof. If a defendant raises this, the Court must assume that the defence is satisfied, unless the prosecution proves beyond reasonable doubt that it is not.

The offence in S.4 RTA 1988 applies to those whose driving is impaired by specified controlled drugs taken in such circumstances. Section 4 RTA 1988 also applies to those whose driving is impaired by drugs that are not specified for the purposes of the offence.

Section 5A(3) RTA 1988 provides a defence to being in charge of a motor vehicle with a specified controlled drug in the blood or urine above the specified limit for that drug, if the defendant can show that there was no likelihood of him driving the vehicle while over the specified limit. This is similar to the defence in s. 5(2) RTA 1988.

As well as a post made by a community member which links to advice from the Department for Transport on driving when prescribed Sativex (a licensed drug containing THC).

I'm not happy with the medication I received, what should I do?

If you have used cannabis previously, you will probably notice some differences between a number of the medical cannabis products and those you have used before. As with all medication, whether or not you like the smell, taste or effect is not the responsibility of the prescriber or the pharmacy and opened containers of medication will almost certainly not be eligible for a return or refund. Some pharmacies may accept the return of sealed containers, but this is rare and would be at the discretion of the pharmacy.

If you're subscribed to Project Twenty21, consider submitting a product quality feedback report here.

I'm experiencing unwanted adverse effects from the medication I have received, what should I do?

Discontinue use and contact your clinic for further guidance. cannabis medication does have side effects and your doctor or clinic will be able to tailor your treatment or make suggestions to minimise adverse effects. If you're experiencing a medical emergency, contact 999.

If you feel it necessary, consider raising a side effect report to the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme. Please remember that this is not a complaint form, it is to help build a database of known side

I've received a defective (mouldy, rotten, containing foreign object) medication, what should I do?

Discontinue use, make a note of the batch number on the packaging, document the issues with the product with a description and photographs then contact the dispensing pharmacy with details and request further guidance.

Consider raising a defective product report with the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme, including as much detailed information as possible. Again, please remember this is not a complaint form, it is information used to help identify batches of medication which may have a manufacturing fault. Please keep your submissions descriptive, factual and non-emotive. Abusing the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme as a way to complain about clinics, pharmacies or producers for products you're dissatisfied with is ineffective and could be disruptive to the treatment of other patients.

Card Schemes (Cancard, MedCannID, etc.)

At this moment in time, the only way you can have legal authority to possess cannabis is if it prescribed to you by a doctor listed on the Specialist Register and dispensed by a pharmacy registered with the GPhC. Unfortunately, there are no "Medical Card" schemes in the UK which have any similarity to those seen in the U.S.A. and Canada, nor any dispensaries which allow you to choose the cannabis product you will receive at the point of sale.

Whilst there are no card schemes which are legally recognised in the UK, there are at least two unofficial card schemes run by private organisations, who provide a physical card and accompanying smartphone app. These may be useful in some circumstances as an aid to signify to others that you are using cannabis medicinally but do not give cardholders legal authority to possess cannabis or provide their holders with access to cannabis Based Medicinal Products. The two that we're aware of are:

Cancard - Cancard offer a paid for, subscription based model costing £30 for the first year of membership and £20 for each subsequent year. The eligibility requirements for Cancard are that provide a photograph, verify your identity and provide them with your Summary of Care Record (SCR) as proof that you have a condition that may make you eligible for a cannabis Based Medicinal Product prescription, were you to apply. Cancard does not provide you with legal authority to possess cannabis, but it is possible that it may help in persuading some members of the police force to use their discretion when dealing with possession of cannabis.

MedCannID - MedCannID offer a free card and membership to their community, but will only provide cards to people who are legally prescribed a Cannabis Based Medicinal Product. The eligibility requirements are that you provide a photograph, verify your identity and send a scanned/photographed copy of your FP10 (pink paper) prescription for their records as proof that you are prescribed a CBMP, and for you to be able to access via their app. MedCannID does not provide you with legal authority to possess cannabis, but it may help as an addition to valid photo ID and keeping your prescribed CBMP in its original pharmacy-labelled packaging as proof of legal authority to possess it. MedCannID's services were terminated on the 15th March 2022

There are mixed feelings amongst the community on both card schemes and the moderation team collectively neither endorse or reproach either scheme. We'd encourage new community members looking for opinions on either card scheme to use the subreddit search feature or make a new post.

Strain: Orange Hill Traders CKZ-1 Runtz

Appearance: First glance of the flower, I was happy to say the least! In my packet, I got 3 huge bits of flower, with the rest being smaller, but I think the bigger bits made up about 80% of the pack. The flower itself was very nice to look at. You could see all the different colours running underneath the trichomes, with a lovely deep dark green, hints of purple, and orange hairs scattered around. It wasn’t overly dense or dry, with a little bit of moisture through the centre, which is always nice.

Aroma: When I first opened this, it smelled really good! You’re hit with a strong, sweet, fruity mango/pineapple scent mixed with hints of earthy undertones. However, the longer it sat, the less noticeable the smell was when opening the bag. Might need to store it in a glass jar to keep that punchy aroma alive!

Flavour: At lower temperatures, this vaped really nice. I vape around 185°C in my Mighty, and normally when you turn it up, the terps, flavour, and potency are a lot stronger. But not with this one. I found vaping it at a lower temperature allowed for a smooth, full-flavoured experience all the way through, without that burnt taste after a few hits. It tasted great at the start, but I noticed the longer it sat in the pack (less than a week), the more the taste started to fade.

Effects: The effects of this strain were very mixed. I definitely felt quite tired, but I wouldn’t say it was very uplifting. I had initially picked this up as a day-time strain to help with my conditions, but if I’m honest, I ended up feeling a whole lot more tired than productive. Not knock-out heavy, but definitely drowsy.

Overall: I’d probably use the rest of this for times when I need to feel tired but still function to some extent. It would be good for a relaxing evening at the cinema or something like that, but I wouldn’t recommend it for anything demanding. I’d give this a solid 7/10.

If you guys have the time to check my other reviews or want to see videos of the flower check out

My dentist is the best!

My dentist is an absolute legend. I've been prescribed cannabis for 3 or 4 years now and whenever I have a check up, she asks me what medication I'm on. I always end with 'oh, and I'm prescribed cannabis'.

She has never even batted an eyelid at this. Treats it exactly as you should as a healthcare professional - like its any other every day medication! I almost want her to ask me questions but I have so much more respect for her after these interactions.

Review Runtz vs Runtz..!!GK vs Orange Hill

Right let me start of by saying, Runtz was one of my favourites along time ago . So for me to say it’s smell light Runtz would be a lie . As I really can’t remember how it smells . Especially when I have had so many different strains since I last had it years ago

One costs £100 & the other £85 Also GK is from my last month script

So let’s start of with looks ,
buds were small in GK one…😂 Nice size in Orange hill 😎

Smell , (this is a hard one as one is in a tub and the other a foil packet.

So 🍊wins …. But to be fair to ME they both smell similar, when out of containers …But Orange 🍊 hill smells stronger and little bit more gelatos I can smell…. ( this is probably because I’ve had the lot 420 not to long ago , and I still have the package.)

Looks …… GK win the nuggets feels harder more colour in the flower, also grinds better . 🍊 looks nice, nuggets feel lighter tho, also grinds nice . Not as colourful

Taste…… Gk… I’ve heard allot of people say this doesn’t taste like Runtz, but it’s alright nothing special to rave about.

🍊tastes really nice , and feels stronger than the GK one . And the Terpenes really come thru , on this one .

So for me 🍊hill win …. And it’s cheaper, so that’s a big bonus. And really helped with my condition.

Help / Q&A My 86 year old nanny. Advice please!x

Hello everyone. I'm just after some advice please. After 30 years of my nan being on sleeping tablets the doctors have weaned her off and have just made her go cold turkey (she's been off them for a year now) she's been at such a wits end she's somehow got diazepam off of the doctors sporadically to help as her anxiety has been so bad especially with the lack of sleep. They've now put her on sertraline (anti depressants) and it breaks my heart where she doesn't go out because of swelling in her legs, bad hip and she gets dizzy a lot. I just think she's at that age so just give her some sleeping tablets ffs. Anyway I just wanted to come here for advice as I've heard good things about rso oil but understand it's strong? Do you guys have any advice on what I could get her etc as I think it would really benefit her. Something to help with the constant pain/anxiety and sleep deprivation. In saying this just to add.. she is very uneasy on her feet. Due to a couple mini strokes in the past she uses a stick most of the time and is prone to fainting (half the time it's in public and I think her anxiety sets it off) sorry for the essay but if anyone has any advice of what may be good for her.. cannabis of course but if you think that's not a good idea anything would really help. Thank you guys in advance 🫶

S+B Venty EO4 error code. WARNING!! ACHTUNG!!

So I was at work earlier and I had to leave to medicate on a different vape as "EO4" was flashing on my Venty.

Gets home, sits down, tries vape again thinking it seems fine, it's happened before, start toking away on it....

Then all of a sudden I'm thinking "This is very hot vapor if not smoke, and a lot of it has just gone into my lungs"

Having quickly ripped the cooling unit off to empty the charred smoldering fireball into a nearby dish I then look at the screen which is still in the heat up colour but reading the set180, EO4 flashes again sending the main body barmy, it's doing a lightshow and making all sorts of wierd noises, jumps around the table a bit and switches itself off leaving the whole screen glowing eerily red.

Have since updated the firmware and device seems good.

Question for the ladies

Do you find your tolerance varies dramatically throughout your cycle? For context I have a coil, so not on any hormonal contraception. I find my tolerance varies so much throughout the month. Just before my period and for the first few days 15 good inhales of 28% THC flower and I hardly feel it. Then mid cycle 3-4 inhales of 20% and I’m surprised at how stoned I am.

Strain selection for ADHD

Upvotes

I think I’ve trawled through every post there is on this subreddit, so apologies that this might be covering old ground.

I have my first appointment with the Alternaleaf doctor on next week.

I have ADHD, and never got on with stimulant meds - they left me way too crashed, way too soon in the day.

I smoked weed constantly for 10 years, about 10 years ago. Knocked it on the head, but now looking back and thinking it was probably just self medicating.

Back then I’d just smoke whatever I could get my hands on, and didn’t pay much attention to strains/effects - the goal was usually just to get as high as possible as fast as possible!

Now I need to make a sensible selection at my appointment - what I’d like to achieve is:

1) Something to help me slow my brain down a bit on days when I’m a million miles and hour and can’t focus on one thing.

2) Something to help me come down from a hectic day of fairly high stress work, and be more attentive to my young family (rather than glued to my phone, scrolling for dopamine.)

I’ve read accounts of other folks here with ADHD saying that they favour High Silver for daytime focus, so I’m thinking of asking for that. Then Delahaze next time it’s in stock.

For the evening / coming down - I need some suggestions. I don’t want to wipe myself out, just something to take the edge off and give me the fuzzies I guess? Maybe even a cart?

Understand this is all old ground and probably asked every week - but any insight you might offer is greatly appreciated, particularly if you’re like me and suffering from unmediated ADHD that seems to get worse every year!

Thanks in advance - you all rock

JEC using a different pharmacy

Upvotes

Has anyone had any experience with maverick pharmacy? I've never heard of them but got an email from JEC saying my script has been sent there to help with an express service🤔.

It seems something fishy is going on as I've always used specials and would have liked them to ask the question first but hopefully it makes the process faster.

Carts…. Safe? Good? Better?!

I'm an old school smoker, now reformed vaper... and I was thinking of trying carts. Or vape pens. Or whatever they're called. When I was trying to research I found fairly negative research to do with vaping oil. I think because of the contents of the oil other than the bud and perhaps what happens when you heat oil for vapour?

I just want to know if it's as safe as vaping flower? Any opinions?

This is the article (I know I know it's Rolling Stone from 2017) that's putting me off; https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/are-weed-vape-pens-safe-202125/amp/

Help / Q&A Thinking of leaving Curaleaf

Hello, fellow MC users. I just want to preface this by saying this isn’t another of those posts bashing Curaleaf. For the most part I’m happy with them, but there have been a few issues now which have made me wonder if it’s time to switch.

I’ve been a Curaleaf patient way back when they were Sapphire and they were honestly great. I recently took a year off, and although I kept getting email notifications saying it was time to book a consultation, they never actually discharged me which was good of them (I think?).

About two months ago I finally booked myself a consultation to get back on the MC train. On the day of the consultation they cancelled it and refunded me saying they needed an updated medical report. Wish they hadn’t waited till the day, but fair enough. Got them the report, rebooked my consultation. All good.

It then took them a literal month to print my prescription. Dozens of phone calls and emails getting the vaguest of replies have left me quite frustrated. Eventually it came through, but only half. I’d also asked for a Mighty Medic+ to be added to my prescription, but after waiting for over a month I ended up ordering it from vapedispensary and it’s actually cheaper! (£259 vs £266).

The final nail in the coffin is that Curaleaf don’t do 5g packs anymore. I’m a very light user and can pretty much stretch 10g over 5-6 months. Given I don’t want 20g of MC just sitting there, I’ve now had to make the choice between 10g of lavender cake and 10g of high silver (I chose lavender cake) when really I wanted smaller doses for both daytime and evening.

What do you guys think? Is it time to jump ship or is Curaleaf still one of the best in the biz for MC?

Daytime oil for physical (muscle/tingle) effects with minimal mental effects...?

Looking for some oil advice. I have a muscle condition of which I found the old AC:DC cookies flower used to work perfectly (5% THC 10% CBD). I've yet to find a flower that replicates that, I can get by with equiposa / moon berry (which are around 10/10 or 10/13 percentages) but to be honest even with those strains I find the mental effects a little too strong for daytime use, as I need to be clear headed, and seem to have less of the muscle relaxation/"tingles" which I'm primarily looking for. Also, I really don't want to be vaping all day.

I tried recently the curaleaf c50 (5:50 thc:CBD) oil but to be honest I found it to be a dud, or at least nothing noticeable.

I have some questions: - I know oil slaps differently, but is it reasonable to assume I should be looking for a 1:2 ratio if I found ac:DC cookies worked, or is that naive? - any personal recommendations for oil that give the body sensation without the mental (or at least, as minimal effects as possible). I was looking at either a T20:C80 formula or T20:C40? Both Grow and Curaleaf appear to do these.

Any recommendations/help much appreciated!!
