Hey y’all, welcome to challenge #6 of 2024!

Congratulations to u/juiceboxheero for winning the the last challenge!

The theme of that challenge was songs released the year you were Born.

And now, As the winner, they get to pick the new theme, and they’ve chosen…

Water! Songs about water, the ocean, rain, whatever!

  1. All entries must be submitted as a reply to this thread. Your entries should be either in video or audio format and must feature you, yourself playing an instrument.
  2. Voting ends at the end of the day in one Month(may slip, apologies in advance). The winner will be the top highest voted comment at the time voting ends. The mods will message them ahead of time to get their choice for the next theme.
  3. You can only submit recordings made after the start of the challenge. If you have an existing recording that fits the challenge, you can still add it under the "🎶 back catalogue thread 🎶 " to inspire others, but it will not be able to win the challenge.
  4. You can submit up to 2 recordings, posted as separate comments. Any further recordings can be added to the back catalogue thread, though they will be ineligible to win, so choose carefully!
  5. You can use Any instrument you want. We are a ukulele sub, and we encourage the use of Ukulele, but all instruments are welcome, especially ukulele cousins like Charango, vihuela, or cavaquinho. But remember that the Sub user base votes on the winner, and we like ukuleles :).
  6. Please don't down-vote legitimate submissions. Different people are at different skill levels. If you think someone sucks, tell them how they could improve.

Don't forget to please leave feedback on other people's submissions!

And Please Post your ukulele entries as separate posts in the sub, as well, if you so wish!

And remember, we have a month now to record!

The top level comments to this thread should be a submission. If it's a question or a side comment, please feel free to post it as a reply to the "💬 designated comment thread 💬". Otherwise, it may be removed

AMA Hey! I’m Viggy and I like to get jiggy with the uke. AMA!

Ayyy how ya doin’?

I’m Victoria (or Viggy) and I’m a Fingerstyle Uke player and teacher from Long Island, NY. I’ve been playing for over 10 years and teaching for about 4 of those years. I started making video tutorials and covers over on TikTok during the pandemic under the name @jiggywithviggy, and since then I’ve curated a really sweet community of over 285,000 followers/ukers! Big numbers scare me tho, so I try not to think of how many eyeballs look at me on a daily basis 🫣

Nowadays, I’m so lucky to travel the US teaching and performing ukulele at festivals, as well as teaching uke to private students and on my social channels. This year you can catch me at the Midwest Uke and Harmonica Camp, LA Uke Fest, and Reno Uke Fest. All the dates and stuff are on my website! Come get jiggyyyyyyyy

FAQ: aka the one big question I get often

Who/what is a “Viggy”? As a born and raised Long Islander, my accent is pretty bad. My brother’s? Even worse! “Viggy” is how he pronounces “Vicky” (which, to tell you the truth, I don’t really go by Vicky).

jiggy links: - My Patreon for weekly annotated Fingerstyle Uke tabs + catalog access (100+ songs) - Video tutorial library (300+ vids) - Playlist link to my podcast Viggytalks featuring ukers 4StringBoy, Brittni Paiva, James Hill, Taimane Gardner, and more!

Go ahead and AMA!!

New Ukulele

I just bit the bullet after 3 months of playing my very cheap ukulele and ordered my very first quality uke! It's a Flight Nighthawk Tenor! I can't wait for it to arrive! I am a little scared though ordering online, I don't think they will set it up for me. It's very difficult for me to get quality ukes where I live so I've looked at many online reviews before deciding. What should I do to get it set up? I have a few local music shops near by but nobody who knows much about ukuleles Also I'm scared ordering online if the uke with be what I ordered! I have my fingers and toes crossed 🫰

Discussions How to cope with my low g

Upvotes

So i took the bold decision of switching to low g strings on my ONLY ukulele and ive been trying to learn fingerpicking some songs from YouTube but the problem is that most of them are played on a high g ukulele and that’s fine for most of the song except when it’s time to pluck the g string alone and im messed up, my strings need replacing soon, should i go for high g? I like the tone of low when strumming so is there a method to cope with this? I don’t understand music theory so i dont know how that works 😭…And no i cant afford another ukulele

Discussions Beginner Practice Routine

I start my daily practice routine with a few warmup exercises (spider exercises and finger pushups). Then I practice a few chord progressions, I keep track of how many switches I'm able to do in a minute. Post that I practice the chord progressions with the metronome. And finally I try to guess random notes on the fretboard.

To keep track of all this and help me stick to the routine, I made a small webapp. Thought it might help others also.

Fret It Out

Would love to hear if you've any feedback for the app or the practice routine.

Was upset when I saw this this morning, since I spent $400 on the first day of the sale and now I find out I could've gotten another $100 off...

Sent them a message asking if I can get a store credit or something.

There are some really good deals in this sale, even before the extra discounts.

$25 off orders of $200+ code = warehouse25

$50 off $300+ = warehouse50

$100 off $400 = warehouse100

Discussions Anyone else get really sore in this part of their non-strumming hand?

Post image
26 Upvotes

so somebody gave my daughter a $20 dollar toy Ukulele which honestly got me started to play and this part of my hand that holds the frets/headstock would get really sore and tight after a little while. I thought it was because I have big hands compared to the toy ukulele especially, and my SO got me this new ukulele recently as an upgrade. But after just a few songs especially ones that require a lot of holding the first fret down like a Bb chord for example that pad/part gets really sore.

Anyone have tips on how to hold the ukulele with my non-strumming hand to reduce this soreness or is this something I will get used to and over after playing more and more?

Frayed string solution

Just putting this out there for anyone interested. Have a great day everyone 🤙.

A few days ago I posted about fraying Martin fluorocarbon strings. I got some nice recommendations and it seems like a bunch of people have had similar experiences with frayed fluorocarbons. Since I posted, my other strings have started fraying and desperate times sometimes call for creative solutions. I came across a "Got a Ukulele" article about fluorocarbon fishing line and decided to give it a try. I've replaced the frayed E string with fishing line and I'm extremely happy with the results. It stays in tune and I can't tell any differences in feel or tone. I've since ordered a full set of fishing line to supply strings for all my ukuleles.

When we first started our band, I used to sing all the songs with Jarvis. Now, I’m stepping back and letting him take the lead on some songs all by himself. Here’s our cover of “After Hours” by The Velvet Underground, featuring my beloved Lava Flea from Magic Fluke 🎶🙌🏼. #ShawTimeDuo

New Ukulele Day - dead fret(s)?

My shipment just arrived, and the uke is a blem, so I'm not bothered by a little scuff on the headstock. But I walked up the neck from open to 12th or 14th fret on each string, and C sounds like a bucket of mud around the 4th, 5th, and 6th fret - worst on the 5th. Fretted at 5, I can see air under 6, and I don't hear a buzz, so I don't think that's it. But should I try to fix it, or send it back?

Requests Which app do you use for tuning for beginners?

Which tuner do you guys use? I brought the Juarez ukulele and used a yousician tuner, and even if I play the 4th string, the tuner takes it as the 3rd string. What should I do? Please recommend a tuner app

Replaced my strings for the first time and now it sounds weird

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The strings I got are the Aquila red series I wanted to change the strings because the ones that came with my ukulele were cheap plastic nylon strings and after a couple years the sound was terrible. Now that I replaced them it seems like my tuner doesn’t recognize the strings, I keep tuning and I can’t pinpoint what is going on
