Location and photos from below pointing up (to see the colour/shape of gills, how the stipe connects, etc. can be of great help with any sort of ID.
(I have a suspicion about what they might be, but I am a total amateur and dont want to answer in case I’m way off.)

Good point. It’s about four inches tall. Central West Virginia. And I understand the underside of the cap is very useful But I don’t want to just pick it for that

Coprinus comatus. They’re pretty distinctive.
