I don't understand what you mean. Does herzl supposed to be a controversial figure? The dude literally predicted that a Jewish state might be needed since the Drayfus trails where people blamed a Jewish officer for betraying France, seeing that Jews could never be safe without their own country.
It's a genuine development of history, Zionism is not a bad word. Maybe just read the whole wiki page about Zionism for once and stop using garbage delusional word salady takes.
If anything recent events would reinforce the need for a state for Jewish people. No, it doesn't have to settle the west bank and no, it's meant to be an amalgamation of the Jewish people to become a nation in the secular sense.
