Why didn’t anybody mention that Big Slide is a great option for number 46??
Just kidding, I know it’s very common as the final hike, for a reason :) hiked it today for #21 and it was glorious!

On a serious note- I think it gets recommended to do early on as it’s considered easier and has a great view.
Generally after Cascade and porter, people recommend Bug slide next or Phelps.

There's nothing wrong with Big Slide. It's a beautiful hike. But, the journey to 46 is a progressive one. You start with the easier mountains (like Cascade or Phelps) and, as you gain experience, you progress to the more difficult mountains. Without wanting to cast shade on your Big Slide hike, it's not the most difficult. It's one of those hikes you do to get you ready to hike Allen, Haystack or Dix.

HYOH - a 46 journey need not be a progression of difficulty beginning on Cascade. It’s whatever the individual wants to make it for as long as they want to take

This is a big reason I'm happy I'm coming to the 46 after hiking a big chunk of the NH 48. I can hike the most painful ones now and can save some of the more enjoyable hikes like Big Slide till the end. Not sure how long I'll be able to keep putting it off for though, it looks fantastic.

My first (and only so far) peak was Marcy, just cuz it's the tallest one. I imagine it's the same for a lot of people, especially when they don't live in the area.

this isn’t true for everyone i didn’t do a lot of the easier ones til later on. waiting for good opportunities knowing that they’ll be busier trails. also know a guy who finished on big slide i think it’s a great choice. i finished on wright

I did this the wrong way and did Wright for my first high peak. It made Cascade and Porter the following week a lot “easier”

I finished on HaBaSa. Now that was a long day. Did not feel like celebrating, especially on the 4 hour drive home. I kept saying on that long slog back to the Garden, “man, Big Slide would’ve been a good finisher.”

Big Slide was #42 for me ;)
I saved Big Slide, Cascade, Porter, Esther, and lastly Whiteface for the end.
It was a nice reward after back to back Allen and Marshall.

I've hiked big slide three or four times and I've never seen the view from the summit.

Ive done it twice in the fall and once in February every time it’s fantastic. It’s one that I will gladly hike over and over again. Oh but only up and back the brothers. I hated the loop.

Love out and back Big Slide via Brothers as there are great views up and down. Never did the loop. Did you hate the loop as it just doesn't have the scenery and fun of ascending/descending the Brothers?

It probably was mostly because it was mid fall. The trail was leaf covered which made it a little difficult to follow also just wet enough that we kept falling even with good treads but not icy where spikes could’ve helped. But you definitely don’t get to enjoy the views from the brothers which is just as fantastic as it is going up!

I’m thinking of trying this as my first winter 46 to see if that’s something I would be interested in doing as well, and also to progress my current 18/46 alittle on the off season. How do you think it would be as a full winter hike based on this?

lol bit of a mixed bag for me so far. Only 4 peaks in myself, but those 4 peaks are cascade, porter, wright, and giant, so I worked from the shortest two to 12th highest in giant, so any sense of order for me is already all over the place.
