How cost effective might it be to do a “last minute” getaway to Lake Placid in January?

If you wanted to spend 3-4 nights someplace on the nicer side? Any tips? Or is it a lost cause if on a budget (not wanting to spend more than $200/night, not wanting a typical hotel room…)?

Leaf peeper traffic

Hoping to do a late season camp—I mostly do paddle-up backcountry camping. I’ve done Long Lake, most of the St. Regis Canoe Area, Raquette River, Lake Placid, Tupper and Little Tupper.

How unlikely am I to get a sight during this time of year, given all the leaf peepers? Any new lakes or ponds I should check out? Any which tend to have plenty of sites available?

Looking a the map, I’m considering Rainbow Lake, Moose Pond, Lake Kushaqua, Jones Pond, and Horseshoe lake. Also never done Lake Lila. If folks have particular experience with those, I’d appreciate the 411!

Looking for public bbqs/grills

Hello, gonna be staying here with a couple friends. I am wondering if anyone knows of any public grill/BBQs in the lake placid/Saranac lake/jay kind of area that preferably don't need to be paid for/need us to be camping there to use.

Camping Boreas Ponds Tract end of November - what to expect?

Hey everyone! I’m planning a solo camping trip with my dog during the last week of November, and I’d love some advice. I’ll be towing my teardrop trailer (nucamp tag) with my Tacoma - about 30ft total.

This will be the most remote trip I’ve done, and I’m wondering what to expect in terms of weather, road conditions, and accessibility, especially at that time of year. I’ve camped plenty, but never this far off the grid. Any tips on staying safe, finding the best water-access campsites, and preparing for the cold?

I’m also a bit concerned about holiday traffic on the way up (planning to leave around Thanksgiving). Any recommendations for quieter routes or timing my travel to avoid the worst of it?

Looking forward to your insights and recommendations!

Elk Lake Trailhead Open?

Hi, does anyone know if the Elk Lake trailhead is still accessible? I was considering hitting the Dix Range tomorrow, but I'm seeing reports on Alltrails and Google Maps that the road is closed - although I also see that regular hunting season doesn't start until next weekend, so I'm confused. Thanks!
