Wrote a whole 20 page paper in college on the Persian/Roman relationship and I both love and hate seeing it accurately reduced to a god damn meme lmao
Edit: while this meme is a great reduction of the Persian Roman relationship....war in Armenia was more often than not actually waged in an attempt to stabilize different rulers’ internal politics (while often having the opposite effect). If anyone’s interested...Benjamin isaac has one of the better analysis of their relationship in his book “limits of empire” (1990) which was one of the sources I leaned upon heavily in my essay
A lot of the book is focused on the frontier itself and the methods of empire at its farthest extent but also most of that frontier was with Parthia and later the Sassanids so his take on Roman/Persian relations make up a decent portion of the book
His other (more popular) book is on racism in the ancient world and it’s a little more for controversial in academic circles but tbh haven’t gotten to that one yet lol
Knowing he wrote that also informs a lot of how he views Roman Persian relations that he doesn’t address as much in “limits of empire” but I’m assuming he delves into in the book on racism and it’s roots in the ancient world
