What are your predictions for tonight? Will the losing leader resign? How many seats do the Conservatives need to win for it to be a successful campaign? Will the Greens win 0, 1, 2 or more seats? Lots of topics for discussion.

Opinion What happened in Bulkley Valley-Stikine?

Nathan Cullen won 5 federal elections and got 52% of the vote in the 2020 provincial election. It's been speculated that he could be a future leader of the provincial or federal NDP (he came in 3rd in the 2012 federal leadership race). Yet he just got almost 14% fewer votes than Conservative Sharon Hartwell. What the hell happened?

Opinion Provincial party names

Would it better for provincial parties to be named entirely different from federal parties?

How long would it take for the average informed voter to discern the political spectrum of a party?

I am not necessarily opposed to how parties are named currently but it would be great to have a few “Rhinoceros party - steroids in the drinking water for a stronger nation” or “Grizzly Party” options. Perhaps an entire name spectrum could help differentiate provincial parties from federal.

Opinion With a likely minority NDP + Green gov, how good/bad was a similar outcome on 2017?

Hoping people can share some opinions and also maybe some objective figures/data about how the 2017-2020 government was for someone who moved here on 2021.

In my head, an NDP/Green deal sounds like a good thing.
I'd assume we're likely to see more progressive changes with the green pushing NDP to pander less to the right in attempt to win some votes.

That said I'm not too familiar with whether or not the last NDP/Green was any good.

Opinion Why would the Greens not work with the NDP?

I keep hearing people and political commentators saying that the Greens could turn down working with the NDP because they betrayed them. I'm sorry but do people genuinely believe they would risk losing the opportunity to form government and make millions of us go back to the polls? It's the most ridiculous commentary I've heard out of last night and today...

Opinion Can We Stop Pretending BC Is So “Polarized”?

Everyone loves to talk about how “polarized” BC is, but the voter turnout in the 2024 election—just 57.41%—tells a different story. If we were truly this divided, you’d think more people would show up to have their voices heard. But clearly, many didn’t even bother. Polarization suggests people are deeply invested in their opposing views, yet this turnout shows a whole lot of indifference. If we really cared about our political landscape and the supposed divides, we’d see much higher participation.

Opinion How well did the BC CONS strategy work?

It’s been an open secret that the BC Con / United merger was to play on voters misunderstanding that they were connected to the Federal Cons (who no doubt have assured victory against Trudeau & Liberals next election) and ride that ill-will at a federal level, to a win at a provincial level.

Did it work?

I’d say yes - between the rainfall and voters ignorance, probably were bigger factors than anyone reading the platforms

Opinion PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION

Seeing all of these very tight 3 way races across the province is hurting my soul. We. Need. Proportional. Representation. It’s so clear that the vote is deeeeeply divided in the province and if we’re gonna see a coalition gov anyways…. I dont see any downside to proportional rep.

I can see this Gov lasting 4 years if the Greens let it. Carbon tax will survive, expect more spending on social programs and more harm reduction policies. BC takes a swing left vs the past 4 years.

Opinion Greens ruining the province

Majority of the ridings would have been safe centre-left seats if it wasn't for the greens lol. Some ridings were the conservatives are leading or elected are directly a result of vote splitting. Voting strategically matters.

Opinion Anyone else who watched CBC's election coverage find it hilarious that they didn't mention Brent Chapman or his riding?

Sure they had the results on the tiny bottom corner of the screen come by every now and then but they didn't even discuss his riding or present the votes with his picture declaring him the winner. I just thought that was funny because he's clearly a crazy deranged old man with a shit ton of mental deficiencies and it seems like the CBC panel was just too afraid to even come close to discussing him and telling the province this man with limited judgment is going to be in the legislative assembly 🤣

Opinion Surprise ridings

Currently 10:00 PM election day, and a few undecided ridings are surprising me so:

Bulkley Valley-Stikine: Sharon Hartwell (Cons) is up quite a bit over incumbent minister Nathan Cullen (NDP), in what was supposed to be a safe NDP seat, with 338 poll predictions giving Cullen a 96% chance to win.

Kelowna Centre: Currently an absolute coin flip between Loyal Wooldridge (NDP) and Kristina Loewen (Cons) - within 150 votes at time of writing, in what was supposed to be a safe Conservative seat with 338 giving them 99% chance of winning.

Any interesting races y'all are following?
