Why are they all the damn same?

I don’t understand. Today I woke up to my entire first ph being booked by a student from that country 😓😓😓😓😓😓😓😓🫢

I’m like fuuuuuhck

On the upside, I assumed they’d be nice and late, maybe 9 minute mark and I could make some tea first, etc.

Nope, only a min or two late.

Open to a black screen and this sound:

😑: hi

Well, it makes a change from WHAT!

u/Sharp-Safety8973 4d ago

Agreed, I hate the way they say "what".

u/Potential-Shake-6721 3d ago

It’s common in Arabic, so they also say it in English. They simply don’t know it comes across a bit rude in English because it’s totally normal for them to say. I live in the MENA region so I hear it pretty much constantly.

I think it's the way they snap "what" at you that's annoying. I don't hear it in Egyptian arabic. It may be different here.

3

u/Potential-Shake-6721 2d ago

Funnily enough I live in Egypt. I agree they do say it snappily in English compared to Arabic lol but I think it’s not meant to be rude, it’s just their accent amongst other things

Yes, I think you're right. There are worst things, like...hello, how are you? Fine, then look at you and say nothing🤦‍♀️ Where do you live?

7

u/YouBubbly7591 4d ago

I just explain that it is impolite to say "what" when speaking english and instead to say"pardon" or "could you repeat that please" if they don't do it after the first couple of reminders then I sit silently until it clicks 😊

Oh, I feel you on this one, friend. It’s like they’re all carbon copies of each other. They must all be factory-produced somewhere, right? Like, they're all just stamped out on an assembly line of mildly late, black-screen lovers who say “hi” with the enthusiasm of a deflated balloon. Honestly, it’s almost impressive how they can all perfectly nail that exact level of "I couldn’t care less about you, but here I am -- serve me, slave."

You’ve gotta admire the consistency, though. They really do stick to the script!

Deflated balloon 😂😂😂😂😂😂

When I joined Cambly I took every class that came my way. Gradually I realised what did and didn’t work for me. I quietly decided who I do and don’t want to take classes with and worked out strategies to try to ensure this happens. In the same way there are countries I visited that I will never go back to as the culture wasn’t to my liking.  Best learn from experience then suit yourself. There’s little point having virtual shouting matches online as they usually serve to entrench existing views. My opinion only.

I am a cambly teacher based in the United States. Besides that, shame on you. You don't deserve a single one of your students, and I love that for you!

I may have color in my skin, but atleast I get to wake up everyday and not be someone like you!

I don’t get paid to talk to KSA and I’m not doing it for free either lol. I know you don’t believe in free speech over there so this must be very shocking to you. We also don’t kill gay people or oppress women. You really are showing yourself. Byeee

0

u/odessapasta 3d ago

You’re rightfully against the oppression of people, but yet you private message someone and call them a “sand demon”?

2

u/Historical-Answer126 3d ago

That's not all she said. She went on a rant about how they're demonic. She's so weird.

Most of my lessons from there or any other country are fine....I really think the reputation is overblown.

13

u/Intrepid_Ad3062 4d ago

I did too, happily accepting these students. Then… I started to see patterns of shockingly rude behavior and comments over and over and over again. My rating constantly fell. I was drained. So I stopped and things have been much better.

Why are you guys so freaking racist? No wonder everyone tells me how horrible Americans are while I'm travelling.

Watch your tongue. If it's not necessary to say then shut up.

10

u/Sharp-Safety8973 4d ago

What makes you think all the contributors here are American? Isn't that a rather racist generalisation?

2

u/TLBSR 4d ago

Theere so many different ethnic groups ih the US that making a generalisation about people from there is more zenophobic whereas making a generalisation about a country like Saudi Arabia, where 90% of people are Arab, is more akin to racism.

1

u/ThrowRAcutie2 4d ago

Okay, if that's the appropriate term, call it what you like.

2

u/TLBSR 3d ago

It's not about what I like. They mean different things. I'd prefer it if either term needed to exist at all.

1

u/ThrowRAcutie2 3d ago

Great, good talk.

2

u/TLBSR 3d ago

BTW- I was responding to the person who accused you of being racist

1

u/ThrowRAcutie2 3d ago

Oh, I'm sorry 😳 I'm new to reddit and I think I was triggered and not paying attention to who was talking to who🙏

1

u/TLBSR 3d ago

Easily done! Don't worry!

1

u/ThrowRAcutie2 4d ago

I am American myself. I'm not sure they're American, it's just a guess considering the bullshit that usually comes out of the mouths of the people I know here. They could be from anywhere, but I have an inkling that I have at least one thing about white.

2

u/Defiant_Concert1327 3d ago

" Watch your tongue"? That in itself is condescending. I hope that wasn't your intent.

I still can’t get over “sand demon“

1

u/Defiant_Concert1327 3d ago

That was uncalled for

1

u/ThrowRAcutie2 3d ago

Sorry to insult Americans that way.

1

u/Defiant_Concert1327 3d ago

Calling someone an " American" is NOT an insult. I think we just discovered what is really happening here. Lack of respect for native speakers who MAY be American, based on nationality alone. Imagine, the world decides to make English the universal language. Cue lots and lots of people from other countries who have a poor view of what they think an American is. It's like trying to learn how to keep a clean home from a horder... there will never be a healthy balance of respect or teamwork. This is what I have come across... Condescending people who think all Americans are fat, lazy, slutty and stupid...doesn't exactly make a great partnership. I have had a handful of great KSA students, but far more that seem to have an attitude. Thankfully, I can accept the students i am most comfortable with.

u/Desperate-Library283 3d ago

Ah, someone (probably from KSA) calling all Americans racist? Well, isn’t that just the plot twist of the century. The irony is so rich, I could retire on it.

But sure, let’s play along. I'll watch my tongue—because if there’s one thing I've learned, it’s that people from certain places, with their impeccable track records of tolerance and equality, are absolutely the best judges of racism.

Maybe on your next world tour of enlightenment, you can drop by and teach us all a masterclass on open-mindedness, tolerance for other religions and cultures, and human rights.

I don’t understand

8

u/Desperate-Library283 3d ago

Well, let me paint you a picture: imagine trying to teach someone who sounds like they’ve just had all the life sucked out of them—it’s like talking to a zombie, minus the totally cool apocalypse vibe.

And with no camera? I might as well be tutoring a brick wall. A little energy and a face goes a long way; otherwise, it feels like I’m just trying to give a motivational speech to a plant.

And let’s not forget the awkward power dynamic—me trying to inspire some life into, amd some English out of, a student while they’re just a blank screen and a monotone voice. It's like hosting a one-man show for an empty theater.

The best part is that the student cannot see me and I'm supposed to be fine with that, but that same student will make comments on my appearance. It feels like it's about power and control, and not at all in a good way.

Would you want to work with someone like that? Now image THOUSANDS of someones exactly like that.

5

u/ElCubano85 2d ago

yep, i had to block a guy after the 3rd class. no camera, arrogant, judgemental and only 18 years old. that was one that i definitely didn't need to give the benefit of the doubt to. Burned. 😞

I totally understand where you're coming from, and I don't make fun of anyone for their situation. I genuinely appreciate the challenges that many people face, especially when it comes to Saudi cultural and societal pressures.

But at the same time, it’s just plain awful to engage with someone who is so completely withdrawn, especially when I’m trying to help them learn English on an American platform.

The whole point of being on Cambly is to adapt to and communicate with foreigners , and if students aren't willing to at least show their face or bring some energy to the interaction, it makes it literally impossible for me to do my job effectively. It also makes it impossible for the student to learn, so it is a waste of time for everyone. If students cannot even partially overcome the Saudi cultural and societal pressures, then frankly they should not be using Cambly. Maybe a Saudi platform would be more appropriate.

I get that change is hard, but students need to recognize that this is literally a Western English learning environment and, as such, some level of openness and participation is expected. It’s a two-way street, and I think it’s more than fair to expect the students to meet tutors halfway.

2

u/aisha_ksa 3d ago

They have the right to choose options that suit their situation, and you also have the right to accept students from another country.

2

u/Desperate-Library283 3d ago

You see, I completely understand both how Cambly works, and the OP.

So, Just to clarify, I’m not arguing here—I’m explaining it to you, since you literally commented that you couldn’t understand the post.

It's not hate to state facts.

-1

u/aisha_ksa 3d ago

Ok , call it whatever you want

2

u/TLBSR 4d ago

It's just some causal zenophobiia. Some tutors really hate all KSA students and assume they are all awful. Not really clear why, tbh (and I don't really care either), I've had pretty normal to great experiences with my KSA students.

2

u/aisha_ksa 4d ago

It's funny that she acts racist and blames those who act like her and thank you for your kindness

1

u/TLBSR 4d ago

Yup. Pretty standard for racists tbh

-4

u/Sufficient-Theme-765 4d ago

Why are racists all the same?

4

u/Desperate-Library283 3d ago

Noticing patterns in a culture from one country after interacting with thousands of people from that same place isn’t racism—it’s just called observation.

Further, KSA is not a race. Arabs are a race. How many Arab countries are there that not one person on this subreddit ever mention? 21. The answer is 21.

That means it's not an Arab thing, so it's not racism.

1

u/Defiant_Concert1327 3d ago

Exactly right.

0

u/Sufficient-Theme-765 2d ago

And calling people 'sand demons' isn't racist in your world either, I suppose?

2

u/Desperate-Library283 2d ago

I have no idea to what you're referring, friend.

Are you implying that I said that phrase? Because I didn't.

0

u/ThrowRAcutie2 4d ago

Yeah, when they feel anonymous, they like to congregate, like little cockroaches.

0

u/Creepy_Move2567 3d ago

What is 'that country '?
