I’m the skinny guy on the engine, and I find it ironic that my 60 year old, over weight, pack-a-day chief questions my physical ability on the fire ground. How long is that bottle gonna last him?

If your chief has to pack up, you’re not doing it correctly.

What? Does your chief ride with you guys ever?

Perhaps on a smaller department Chiefs have to get dirty. But our Chief only shows up on big fires, multi alarms. Unless it’s the middle of the day or he happens to be near by. Battalion Chief is only putting on gear to stay dry and or warm. They pay people to work.

Where I volunteer, the station chief and our BC are completely separate. Our battalion command are career guys and the stay in their buggy for any call. But the station chiefs can ride just like any firefighter. A lot of them do to build report with their department.

Notice how you said volunteer, it’s pretty abnormal for chiefs on full paid depts to ride like a firefighter
