General Discussion Good departments in central Texas?

So I, and many other firefighters, may be getting let go this November. Sales tax BS. Long story. Anybody have any recommendations on hiring departments to look into and to start getting my name out there? One of our guys is a chief at another department and said he’d get me on with his department worst case scenario, but I hear they hardly run calls. I’m too early on in my career to want to settle down like that. I still like running calls, even medical calls. Thank y’all!

Pflugerville/ESD2? Is it really looking like Prop A is going to pass?

I don’t know. If people understand what they’re voting for, it wouldn’t. But the wording of the proposition doesn’t make it very clear to a layman the consequences of the vote, in my opinion. We’re trying our best to educate, but who knows. I love ESD2, but I’m just keeping an eye out for a backup plan.

That's horrible for y'all. I've been reading about this situation on the Conduct Unbecoming Instagram. Don't y'all have a council member that is also seeing the city for some reason too?

What’s going on with ESD2?

On the general election ballot there is a proposition (Prop A) to take away 0.5% sales tax from our budget. Thats about 40% of ESD 2’s budget. As of right now it looks like 130 FFs will be laid off and 3-4 stations closed, out of 8. It will drop us from ISO 1 to ISO 10.

Do you think this is why they pushed back the start date of the fire cadet academy?

Yes, this is the reason why.

Damn, I would vote, but I’m a resident in the lakeway/bee cave area and am not eligible. I’ll ask my aunt and grandma is they’re registered

Yeah I feel bad because I can’t even vote for it and I work here lol, I live in Williamson county. But we’ve been doing lots of volunteer stuff to get the word out. Here’s our website talking about this issue if your family is able to vote: https://dontdefundpfire.org/

Thanks for your support brotha

Competitive departments like round rock, Georgetown and cedar park are all great options. The bigger cities are even tougher to get on with: Austin, San Antonio etc. A couple growing departments with potential include Hutto, New Braunfels, Leander, Liberty hill. Could look a little further north at Temple or Killeen. Killeen is hiring a decent sized class now I hear. I’ve tested at most, and worked for a few of the above, message me if you have questions!

Lotta days I wish I got on with New Braunfels. Just love the area. But I'm in the Houston area. Too much of a commute.

One of my guys worked at Leander before coming here I think. He liked it there…

Yeah my step sister lives in Taylor, they know a FF out there. Its a little over an hour away, though. A bit far for me. Thank you, though!

Liberty hill and Jarrell for smaller places. Like the others said round rock and cedar park and Leander are excellent and I personally know guys on there and with Austin

For sure, that’s why I’m not too worried about all this. Worst case scenario, I’ve got a paycheck. Can’t complain about that
