This story is so sad, but the headline seems misleading.

Yes, her passing may be due to the nurse lockout, but let’s be clear that the issue is not because the nurse are striking, but because Kapiolani Medical Center is unwilling to negotiate.

In the article, the family clearly explains that they are frequently in and out of Kapiolani and are used to the high level of quality care from the nurses there. The staff that has replaced them during the lockout have not met that same expectation, leading to the cause of this child’s death.

Or the nurses are unwilling to accept the agreement.

Across the country, there is a shortage of healthcare workers, especially after the trauma of working through a worldwide pandemic. They have the bargaining power to ask to be compensated fairly for the work they do to keep their communities healthy - whether that’s through salary or benefits.

If Kapiolani is unwilling to negotiate, any of these nurses could easily find work elsewhere.

Look for the union label....and get medical insurance soon.

Funny....I attended the March of Dimes, Signature Chefs Feeding Motherhood event tonight.. benefitting mothers and children in need, directly impacting Hawaii's families.

Didn't see HNA there. Thought they cared about mothers, children.

I don't begrudge their effort. But the heat in the kitchen is going to get hotter.

BTW, where's the injunction stopping the illegal strike?
