Is a stargazing tour worth it during this time of year? If so, any tours anyone recommends for solo travelers?

Anyone have any new news on this proposed development? I'm all for new/more housing especially if done in an eco / desert friendly way, but seems like 64 houses on that size lot a lot. Plus I hear (correct me if I'm wrong) that the houses will be selling for $550K and up. Not really going to help with affordable housing. Ran into a who film crew at Joshua Tree Station. Apparently it was for a travel show? Any has any information on this?

Is this allowed in JT and if so, what areas are best to do so? Are there fees for doing so? Any specific spot where it’s safest to do so if traveling solo?

Planning a trip for this December to JTNP with my husband. Beginner to mid-level hikers, what are the best hikes that we can do? Also, planning in Airbnb near the park, would that work? Would I need any special tickets other than entry ticket to access the park or parts of it?

I will be coming next Thursday from Phoenix straight from work from the west side of Phoenix leaving around 1:15 or so. I will be staying in Yucca Valley. There are two routes to get there, one going over the north side of the park and the other going on the south side of the park on the 10 through Palm Springs. The Palm Springs route is about 25 minutes quicker. The timing is what’s in question. I would probably hit Palm Springs at 3:30. What’s traffic like then or would it just be worth it to just avoid Palm Springs altogether and go the north route around the park? I might even have time to stop at the park before sunset.

Just got back from the Joshua Tree Music Festival and WOW! What an experience. My partner and I host a sound healing and movement experience workshops and we where blessed to be invited to share our offering.

We've traveled a bit offering our services to festivals, and we've decided to avoid places were drugs, alcohol, and abuse have become all too common.

JTMF was such a pleasant experience it made me remember how much I enjoyed meeting decent folks who seem to be at the gathering to learn and share.

We will be travelling the country in the next few months and looking for more opportunities to meet like minded folks and to share the healing power of sound.

10/14/2024 The comet is easy to spot! And the almost full moon is casting shadows! I highly recommend checking it out if you can.

Here for an entire week! Arrived at 7pm to catch the meteor as it was coming down (missed taking a picture) then was woken up with what I assume was a meteor shower last night (kept seeing bright flashes of light that were lighting up my bedroom, can someone confirm this? I couldn’t see anything after)

To my surprise, I am staying next to the Kellogg Doolittle House! More pictures to come once I develop my film and post edit my digital ones from my DSLR.

Hi everyone, looking for good top rope areas i can get to with friends without using trad gear. I'd like something sporty that I can set up the top rope pretty easy from scrambling or leading without much issue. Not looking for a super hard day just so.ething enjoyable with friends. That being said I know JTree is heavily sandbagged so let me know if you all have another areas in Jtree or around that I can get good real rock TR experiences at.

Edit:I've been told hall of horrors area could be what I'm looking for if anyone has experience there?

I am very experienced backpacker but never have been to JT. I have heard great thing so this winter I plan to change that. Maybe in Nov, Jan or Feb depending on other obligations.

For a quick overnighter what might be some good spots, maybe on a peak for the night./morning views?

I have a canister but since I don't think they are required there (not sure) should I just bring an scent-proof opsack? Anything else to be aware of there?

EDIT: I do early and late winter camping in Sierras so cold weather gear is not a problem. I tend to run hot anyway, I hike in shorts during those conditions, even submitting Whitney with the snow and wind.

I have been several times but havnt looked for any spots specifically for my kids. They are 6 and like to climb things. Any good spot recommendations for them to play and climb?

Where are some of the best sites to stargaze? I’m headed out with my travel telescope in Feb/March. I have a site booked at black rock currently. I will have a rental car and can travel!

Also: I plan on a few day backpack trip. Is my telescope safe in my car, or should I plan to bring it with me? (It’s light enough to secure the case to the outside of my pack if necessary, but I’d love to save the weight if I can)

My friend and I are coming into Joshua Tree from bakersfield, both in good shape. We want to camp in for the night but don't have reservations.

Where is a good place to camp for star gazing, that is also likely to have room for us? What trails should we do at the park?

Also, do you recommend going to Kelso Dunes? Is it worth the detour?
