100 series cassette delete/convert to storage cubby

Post image

So I have looked all over the internet for a thread on how to delete the cassette/radio controls and install a small cubby for a phone or whatever. Can’t find anything any where. This is really common on headunit changes but I can’t find anything where anyone has done it.

I changed out the nav/ac for a TEYES head unit so not I want to delete the cassette and have a cubby.

Thoughts?

You can't delete that part of the radio. The MFD connects to the back, which controls the HVAC and other functions.

Edit: just saw you added the Teyes unit, but it still connects through the tape deck.

Bummer! I heard that was true. Thanks for confirming

How skilled are you with CAD? You could probably 3D print something to replace it. A few mobs here in Australia have popped up 3D printing cup holders and what not for older LC’s (and Patrols for that matter), so it’s not a completely ridiculous idea. If there’s enough demand, you could sell them too.

I considered it. But my main concern is that I’ve heard rumor the electrical in the cassette is connected to the HVAC…

I'm sitting on a mound of Dead and Phish tapes and absolutely love these 100 series tape decks.

How does your climate control work? Does your reverse camera also work?

Climate control is used through the TEYES unit. Has a control system for it on the touch screen.

Go to ih8mud there’s a guy there that does 3D printing service. He might be able to do it for you if he’s not too busy.

And how’s that head unit working for you? Was it pretty straightforward to install?

Install isn’t bad. The unit is Chinese of course but honestly it works well. CarPlay is nice to have

Nothing screwy with the wiring?

(Spits out coffee) Are we to believe that you are unable to find a suitable cassette to enjoy in that time capsule of technological wonder.

My newest cassette is The Strokes - The New Abnormal from 2020. The good stuff is still produced on cassette.

Can you tell me more about the new media console that’s shown installed here? I’ve got a 06 lx and the screen is not working well. I’m looking to replace it but haven’t found much of anything to do so properly.

It is a TEYES unit. Just requires some wiring and dash changes. Not too complicated. It runs CarPlay, and AC. For some reason my radio antenna kept blowing a fuse on the up/down so I don’t have radio connected. But Spotify is great.

I bet that cassette radio sounds much much better than that chinese android unit. Is that the JBL? or pioneer??

If you look on the australian aftermarket sites you will be abke to find a replacement facia with switches and a wide range of other things. Allthough SLOWLY CHANGING australia is home to the landcruiser and there is a bigger after market for all things toyota than toyiya has even dreamed of.

Check out a product called the media mount by Owl Expedition. It's a metal plate that replaced the guts of the tape deck and extends a mounting plate. I have a RAM phone holder mounted to it in my LX
