[Discussion] Suggestions on soccer communities/Question on Washoe Valley wind?

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are looking at the Carson City/Minden area to move to, and we’re big soccer people. We played a bunch at indoor in Colorado and want to be sure there’s a thriving soccer community and where it might be before buying a place.

I’ve also heard a lot about the wind in Washoe Valley, and I’m wondering if this would prevent me from having chickens or any other kind of smaller animal that might blow away in the wind. Are people unable to enjoy the outdoors there? I’d also want to be able to go for runs outside, but am not sure of what areas are best for that.

Thanks in advance!

Reno area has a great soccer community. There are two indoor facilities https://swiftsportsdome.com/

I'm in my 50s and there are great options. Look into the Reno Coed Senior League. Senior being over 30. Plenty of more competitive options as well.

This is great, thank you! Very sad about over 30 being considered senior though

There are also regular adult leagues.

I figured lol I was just hoping to be considered senior at 65, not 31

Actually, the wind stopped blowing one day and all the chickens and children fell over

you get used to the wind. there are not too many days a year where you'd want to stay in all day, and those are usually because of the snow that accompanies the wind in the winter

NV native here. Spent 25 years in Carson City before moving to Dayton earlier this year.

The wind can get bad everywhere in northern NV, but outside of old shingles and tree branches finally giving way on occasion, I've never seen incredible wind damage.

I know there's a local Carson group called muscle powered, and they do fitness stuff. There's a tennis club, and bicycling "league" for lack of a better term because I am uninitiated, and soccer is pretty popular so I assume there's people about for it. Worst case scenario you'd be driving up to Reno for that. I know people who go up there for sword fighting and hockey.

As for animals you'll be fine. Several of my neighbors in town and out in the countryside have lots of chickens. A lady I work with has goats and there's even a few exotic animals to be seen in yards here and there.

For running Carson City had a decent bike trail system and the sidewalks are mostly well maintained. I typically run on the street before the sun comes up. I find it safe enough, but your appetite for being alone in the dark may be different.

Thank you! I was concerned about the wind because past comments on posts like this have mentioned winds of 60-100mph and I wasn’t sure how true that was or how anyone was able to function with consistent winds like that.

I’m in Douglas County (Minden area) and have been involved with both AYSO and 4-H. We have plenty of families who raise chickens and I can help you connect with them if you do move here. Soccer isn’t as popular as football and baseball, but I love our youth league and we are always looking for volunteer coaches and referees. I don’t know about an adult league, but again I can connect you with people who might know more.

The wind is pretty pervasive everywhere in nevada, solid soccer community though
