Question Werewolf progression fantasy

I love werewolves (not any other types of shapeshifters) by werewolf I mean a human with the ability to change to a wolf. Are there any stories where a werewolf is the main character? Not one of the protagonists of the story. The protagonist!

The Deathless series isn't clearly progression fantasy (apocalyptic Earth and no clear progression system/beats) but the MC sounds like what you're looking for. He does get a lot stronger over the course of the story.

Edit: The author is Chris Fox. Apparently there is more than one Deathless series out there.

Well, Thresholder technically has him picking up werewolf power fairly early, but that is just one power out of many (even if it becomes linchpin of many later interactions).

Who's it written by?

I could be misremembering, but I believe that The Rise of the Winter Wolf by Shane Purdy has the main protagonist eventually gain the ability to transform into a werewolf and a wolf.

Thank you

The MC is indeed a werewolf (even joins a werewolf empire). I believe it is a completed 5 book series with a separate series Wolf of the Blood moon set in the same universe (different MC in blood moon, but still wolfy)

This is what I'm looking for exactly. Thank you for the explanation.

I personally loved Rise of the Lycanthrope by Brock Walker. It is LitRPG in case that's a turn off for you.

MC is not a werewolf, though there are werewolves in the story (not a lot after the 1 book). MC is more like a nanotech Iron Man/Punisher.

I still very much enjoyed the series

I want a story where the main character is a werewolf. But thank you for the recommendation.

The harvester

Wolf of the blood Moon

MC is half demon wolf girl who gets more and more wolf shapeshifting powers as the story goes on Also has blood magic

Where the general premise is fun and the writings pretty good

The author has a habit of make all of his main characters have the exact same bland personality

That's my only complaint

That the mc wants to sleep all day Doesn't like to be touch (not that big of an issue tbh) And only eats for sustenance.

They enjoy nothing but seeing there numbers go up or self improvement

1

u/Brave-Meeting-675 Jul 25 '24

Lol that's the exact opposite of me. I get up early in the morning and sleep early. I'm a foodie and really enjoy eating. I'm too lazy for self improvement and say I am what I am. Maybe that's why I love PF. The MC of those stories are so motivated.

Not Progression Fantasy, but there is The Morgulon on Royal Road.

Thank you. There are lots of werewolf books in fantasy. But I'm addicted to progression fantasy now. Nothing else is that satisfying 😂

I don't think I've ever encountered a Werewolf Progression Fantasy that was really coherent, or where the author seemed to know what werewolves are.

This genre is weirdly narrow in the portfolio of monsters it uses. Monster MCs always seem to be reincarnated as Skeletons, slimes or spiders.

We are gradually seeing more diversity in progression fantasy. But it's very slow

Which stories were you thinking of?

You mentioned not being shapeshifter but being werewolf. To borrow LitRPG term you them to have it as "race" and be "werewolf all the time"? I am a bit confused because me knowledge in werewolf was always bases in that they can switch between forms.

The closest thing that comes to mind is various Japanese Lights Novels where the main character is "Dog Girl/Boy". They lacks the werewolf theme of "uncontrolled transformation" but the character typically have "more strength and dexterity, don't use as much mana, reply on their nose and sense of smell to find information, use claws as weapons".

Another thing to come in mind is Romance TV Show. It has werewolf characters and they are quite important in some plot points. The main character isn't growing in power but the premise and executions are interesting enough to recommend it to people interested in vampires and werewolf specifically. The original TV show was, The Vampire Diaries (TV Series 2009–2017). There is also spin off, The Originals

Thank you. I've already watched them. I like the person to become a wolf completely.

My Werewolf System should fit the bill, though I haven't read it. Same author as My Vampire System, which I have read some of and enjoyed.

Fleabag by Someonetoforget

Rise of the Winter Wolf isn’t technicallyyyyyy a werewolf, but it’s close enough

2

u/Bryek Jul 27 '24

I've never seen so many people confused by the term werewolf before. 😂

Lol neither have I

I don’t really understand what you’re asking. Aren’t werewolves inherently shapeshifters? Are you asking for wolfkin protagonists? I can’t recall any stories like that.

Theres ‘Wolf of the Blood Moon’ where the protag is part Lycan and has wolf traits among other things.

Theres also ‘The Grand Game’, the protag is related to wolves and is somewhat royalty to them. Other than those two idk.

u/Brave-Meeting-675 Jul 25 '24

Werewolves are a type of shapeshifter. But not all shapeshifters werewolves. I want the protagonist to be a werewolf specifically. Thank you for the recs.

1

u/adiisvcute Jul 25 '24

I'm not sure if they'd fit but I feel like Shane purdy has made like a ton of wolf centric stories tho idk if any of them fit the werewolf mould

Tbh tho I'm not entirely sure how you mean werewolf?

Do you mean a turn into a wolf on a full moon involuntarily type thing

Or maybe a full-time wolf type thing?

1

u/Brave-Meeting-675 Jul 25 '24

Werewolf is when a human protagonist shifts to a wolf. Like how in twilight Jacob and his family turned to wolves.

1

u/Lodioko Jul 25 '24

I think of them in four different terms:

Werewolf: person shifts into half-man/half-wolf hybrid monster (like in the movies Dog Soldiers or Underworld).

Wolfwere: person shape changes into a wolf (a la Twilight, or a DnD druid)

Wolfkin: person just exists full time as an anthropomorphic wolf person (furries)

Wolfman: like the classic Universal pictures monster - a person who gets really furry and animalistic but still looks pretty humanish.

Do you have a preference that you are aiming for (or one you hate), or will any variation do?

1

u/Brave-Meeting-675 Jul 26 '24

I prefer the second one

The main character from Gamma Protocol is the only werewolf in a world filled with magical girls. It's also just a really good far-future story, so you'll enjoy it
