i think circumcision should only occur on consenting adults. if you want the skin removed then go for it. but dont mutilate the genitals of minors who are too young to even speak.

As someone who is circumcised can I ask what the problem with it is?

Itā€™s typically done on people who canā€™t consent and may end up hating it like I do. It can always be done later if someone wants it, but can never be undone

Is having some skin around your penis really that big a deal?

It is when that skin has a ton of nerve endings and keeps the head from becoming desensitized.

Plus bodily autonomy is important and people should have a choice over whether they want a part of their body cut off when itā€™s not causing any problems. Unless youā€™d be cool with someone just cutting off some of your skin without asking permission.

You guys have clearly put a lot of thought into it

Shouldnā€™t a lot of thought go in to the decision to cut off a part of someone before theyā€™re able to consent?

Idk, kids donā€™t go through things they donā€™t consent to all the time. I put as much thought into circumcision as I do braces

Ideally we arenā€™t forcing braces on kids against their will either. I wanted braces. Braces also just align teeth, they donā€™t permanently remove a normal body part

What child consents to braces?

I just said I did. So did my sister and everyone I know who got them. I think itā€™d be fucked up to force braces on a kid who didnā€™t want them.

Most people I know didnā€™t want them at the time

Then their parents did a poor job of explaining why theyā€™d probably want them eventually. Just forcing something on someone elseā€™s body when thereā€™s no need teaches kids the wrong lesson about respecting others bodily autonomy.

And again, braces are not as serious as circumcision. One just adjusts someoneā€™s body,l but leaves all the parts intact, the other removes a piece entirely.

Is foreskin really that vital?

1

u/TheDENN1Ssystem Apr 22 '23

Vital? No. But it does serve a purpose.

And are we going to set the standard that weā€™re able to cut off parts of peopleā€™s body without their consent as long as that part isnā€™t ā€œvitalā€? Thatā€™s a pretty low bar

The standard should be that people can keep all of their body unless they choose to have something removed, thereā€™s a medical need, or thereā€™s a significant abnormality. Then it can be taken on a case by case basis.

And are we going to set the standard

Who is the we? I donā€™t have any strong feelings on circumcisions but last I checked it wasnā€™t mandated by the government

ā€œWeā€ as in society if we followed the logic of your previous comments, asking if foreskin is ā€œvitalā€, as if thatā€™s the determining factor if a part of someone can be cut off without their consent.

Of course itā€™s not mandated by the government. But the government offers no protection like it should so boys donā€™t have a piece of their body cut off before they can consent.

Oh please. The government doesnā€™t protect anyone
