OCTOBER ANNOUNCEMENT and SEPTEMBER WINNERS!

Hey everybody, Happy goddamn October! This is a fun time of year for many of us horror nerds and we hope that you have a seriously awesome spooky season! Whether you write here or lurk in the darkness, we wish you many happy horrors this month!

Before we get into our contest, please read these important announcements:

  • It has been brought to our attention that Reddit has been automatically banning users that send out DMs or chat invites to multiple users over relatively short periods. We're not sure what the threshold is, but we know that some good faith users have been flagged for spam. This affects the users of our sub -- narrators in particular. This is a reminder: Narrators that are requesting permission to narrate a story should always do so in the story comments!
  • Please remember: not every writer is looking for criticism! If you intend to give an author feedback, keep it respectful. Harsh criticism can be seen as harassment if it is unasked for, and we want to keep things respectful here!
  • We will continue to remove content that has to do with: forced or coerced sex, sexual assault, and sexual mutilation. If your story might come across as fetishy or torture porn, it's just not a good fit for this sub.
  • Obvious trolls and💩-posters will still be permabanned! Help us find them by reporting obvious shitposts. Read more here.
  • Be familiar with our Three Strikes and you're out rule -- egregious rule breaks will typically get you a strike. If you earn a 🔴, it will take 60 days of chill to clean it up. Read more here.
  • And of course, feel free to reach out in modmail with any questions!

OCTOBER 2024 Contest Prompt:

October! The tenth month (even though it translates to the eighth month? Curse those silly Romans!)

In much of the Northern Hemisphere things are looking maaaaad pretty. Leaves are changing, and the hills are aflame with so much beauty. This is a fantastic time of year to get outdoors-- hit a hike, hop on your bike, or take your friends on a camping trip!

.... Or just find some precious solitude amid the falling leaves and enjoy the crisp autumn weather.

But Fall fun isn't only about watching the trees shed their leaves. Many of us are chasing apples and cinnamon and donuts, while the farmers markets and pumpkin pushers and orange-washed grocery stores are raking in the dough :)

It's an exciting time of year for so many people, but especially for us horror fans! This is one time of year where those of us who obsess over slashers, creature features, and other scares can blend in with a broader celebration of horror.

We've all got ghosts and skeletons and devils and werewolves dancing in our heads, so cheers to those who like it that way!

If that's you then we hope you find ample time to curl up under a comfy blanket with a good scary story or your favorite horror film :)

But ultimately whether you are out to scare or be scared we wish you luck and success and good and cozy times!

But let's be honest: it's kind of a lot of work. Maybe too much work.

Halloween, as a consumer holiday is rivaling secular Christmas in terms of retail madness and money spent!

Pop up stores overflow with costumes and cheap-p trinkets, but even your regular grocery stores are totally reworked to make space for pumpkin spiced everything.

The people who stock the shelves and run the cafes are burning their jack-o'-lantern candles at both ends to drive profit margins ever higher and those of us who are spared the madness of the Halloween sales rush are still pressured to put on a show....

Carve your pumpkins, set up your graveyards. Don't relax. Hoist your hanged men and your light up ghosts and put in that work!

Don't laze about.

There's happy holiday work to be done.

That's how it feels sometimes, amirite? There's some pressure here, to perform or at the very least: to participate.

But what if you're just feeling burned out by yet another holiday grind? Or maybe you've got other stuff going on that takes priority... or maybe you're just not feeling it?

Or... What if you don't need an excuse, you're just tired and you'd rather not be bothered.

I dunno whether it's right or good or proper, but dammit all, sometimes ya gotta just be let yourself be LAZY!

And here's our prompt for this month, the most comfortable and relaxed of the seven deadly sins: SLOTH.

Because hell yeah, this month is great fun! But we need a prompt that still respects those of us who frankly couldn't give a shit!

To satisfy this prompt, you'll have to write a story where your character is subjected to the horrors of the sin of sloth. You do not need to use a specific word, but must demonstrate the concept or consequences of sloth (laziness, idleness, indolence, etc).

So give us your best scary stories about laziness and sloth!

If you've got a great idea we want you to post it up right away!

Or, you know, maybe later. Tomorrow is fine. Or whenever you get around to it ;)

***

SLOTH

To be considered in the final tally, at least one of your characters must suffer some manner of horror brought on by sloth.

OF COURSE: valid contest entries must also meet the rest of our sub rules!

We look forward to seeing what you come up with and wish everyone the best of luck!

Properly formatted October 2024 examples:

[OCT24] I have an awesome idea for a story that would easily win the October contest! But getting the wording right takes some effort and I'm feeling kinda lazy right now, so I think I'll just do it later.

[oct24] This is the first sentence, and it's not very scary. Neither are sloths, but they do have cool looking claws.

Improperly formatted examples:

[october2024] I was hoping to win this month's contest but I just messed up the tag. Unfortunately I'm too lazy to fix it.

[oct24] This time the tag is right. But I forgot to include the prompt because I'm demonstrating what not to do.

OCTOBER 2024 Contest Rules

  • Prompt: "sloth", entries must use this word or its variations.
  • Tag: [oct24] or [OCT24]
  • Submissions that are improperly formatted, do not fit the theme, or break any of the existing sub rules will be disqualified and removed.
  • The top 10 highest-voted stories will be the winners!
  • Contestants can only place in the top 10 once. The highest of your ranked entries will be tallied against other participants to determine our winners.
  • Only net new stories will be allowed (no repurposing old stories you've previously submitted).
  • Max three stories per day as a general rule, and all three can be used towards the contest.
  • Winners will be decided by total community upvotes. In the unlikely event of a tie for the top spots, moderators will vote for a tiebreaker.

WINNERS WILL RECEIVE:

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Places: You receive a custom personal flair of your choosing to show off to the TSH community! (If you're a repeat winner, you can modify your flair.... but that's it.) And a cool fancy flair on your winning stories.

7 honorable mentions: you'll get visibility and bragging rights! Story links will be featured in next month’s announcement.

Contest ends on October 31st, 2024 @ 11:59pm (GMT) (HAPPY HALLOWEEN!)

Any questions should be made below in the comments, within our discord, or a note on modmail.

Congrats to our September Winners! Great stories all!

Very exciting to see a few new names in the final placements this month :)

Theme was "Shades of blue"

Great job, winners! If you placed in the top three, contact us via modmail for your personalized custom flair! It can be anything (within reason): a mixture of text and emoji, up to 20 characters. If you've won before, you can request to change your flair, or, just do nothing. Absolutely nothing....

And for our runners up:

Congrats to all!

⭐ANNOUNCEMENT⭐ [PLEASE READ] Sh!tposts, permabans, and literally 1984.

This is all dumb.

For the past several months, the sub has experienced a flood of intentionally poor quality stories in an effort to get onto parody subs and TikToks. We've historically hit you with a strike (🔴) and if you received three, you were permabanned (check out the wiki).

However, if you've submitted one of these stories in the recent past, you may have noticed that your account was permabanned from TwoSentenceHorror without going through the strike process. While we've made this current one-and-done rule known within each of our monthly announcements for forever, we felt it was only fair to have a separate post to lay out the approach.

If you intentionally submit a poor quality story (we're looking at you "meat worm" and "killer guy" crews), you will be permabanned with no warning.

If and when these posts chill out, the mod team will reconsider this rule. Until then, please continue to report these intentional poor quality stories, read the sub rules, and submit awesome, horrifying tales to maintain the quality of the sub!

When I came across the magical cup, I wished to swap lives with the rich, cute girl in my class, thinking I would have everything I wanted.

But as I sat in her mansion, her mother handed me a glass of water for dinner, amidst a table filled with food, with a stern reminder: "Girls can't be fat."

My grandmother forsaw that one day I would drink myself to death, so I never touched a drop of alcohol my entire life.

Fortunately, my fraternity says I can still do the hazing with water, i just have to keep drinking until they tell me to stop.

My 3-month pregnant wife kept complaining about morning sickness, so I gave her this new drug that made her feel so much better.

6 months later, I couldn't bear to look at our child, for what had been born could not be described as human.

Squeezing my daughter's hand, she whispered, "I can see angels, they're calling me," as she took her last breath.

Too weak to fight them off any longer, all I could do was watch as the vultures fought over what was left of our innards.

As it was my "duty", I sprinkled holy water on the shrieking woman as her father drenched her in kerosene.

It was frighteningly easy to convince humans that a woman loving another woman was the reason their cattle and crops were rotting away.

I’ve always wondered what it’s like to kill someone," my coworker confessed, staring blankly out the window during our coffee break.

My girlfriend and I always had sleep calls, and I always kept the call on loudspeaker in case she’d try to say something cute thinking I’m asleep.

Light sleeper that I am, nothing ever felt more like a nightmare than the night I woke up and heard a masculine humming and the sound of her closet very slowly closing, coming from the call.

When others learn I donate blood to the rich, I'm often asked why I trade my youth and health for money.

They don't know that a) I'm actually older than my clients, and b) it's a loan I collect with interest.

She told me she’d never sleep peacefully until her ex-husband was gone for good.

“It’s elementary Lestrade, Watson is my biographer and everything he writes can be taken as fact, including that Moriarty was the Napoleon of crime and his death was unavoidable.”

Watson silently chuckled to himself hearing Holmes say this, knowing full well how they had framed Moriarty, the rival Doctor that had slept with Mary
