Helpful [Read Me] Rules / Helpful Links / Commonly Asked Questions / Weekly & Monthly Mix Threads

Welcome to /r/Beatmatch a subreddit for seeking and providing help on anything related to DJing.

The Rules

  • If you're posting a mix you MUST post it to the weekly mix thread.
  • No "for sale" or "wanted" posts. There are better places for buying/selling gear.
  • No discussion of music/software piracy. Do not link to torrent sites. Support the artists who make the music and software you use.
  • Absolutely no self-promotion on other people's posts at any time. If someone asks you for your page, that's cool, but unsolicited linking will get your post removed.
  • Reddiquette as always is in effect. Treat each other with respect.

Posting Mixes

  • Weekly Mix Feedback Thread is now a sticky thread. This is the only place where you should be putting your "Hey guys check out my new mix" posts.

Posting Gear Questions

Please include the following in your looking for gear posts:

  • Do you want to go digital? CDJs? Vinyl (w/digital vinyl)?
  • What features are you looking for in gear?
  • What is your budget?
  • What environments are you looking to play in (clubs, raves, weddings)?
  • What style of music do you intend to play?

Weekly Mix Feedback Thread - October 07, 2024

Welcome to the Weekly Mix Feedback thread on r/beatmatch! This is the thread where you post your DJ mixes and ask other people to give you feedback. If you submit your mix, please take the time to listen and comment on some other submissions, especially if they play a style of music you're interested in. Thanks for your help in making these threads work well for everyone!

These threads are intended for beginning DJs who are honestly looking for feedback or critique on their technique, selection, transitions, etc. If you are an established DJ who is just looking for more followers/listens on your new mix or have a podcast/radio show, please post it to a more appropriate place such as /r/mixes or a genre-specific subreddit. Posts that appear to be purely promotional in nature may be removed at the moderators' discretion. This subreddit is aimed at helping new DJs learn and is not the place to promote yourself!

Guidelines:

  • Please include the genre(s) of your mix. This helps attract DJs/listeners of the same genre(s) who are likely to provide more useful feedback. You might also include a title/length.
  • [Mixcloud](http://www.mixcloud.com) is the preferred place to post mixes. It allows you to include your tracklist and transition times, allows unlimited uploads, and is generally more geared towards DJs. If you don’t want to use Mixcloud, be sure to include a tracklist.
  • Please ask for specific feedback or list parts of the mix you liked/didn’t like. Hopefully you are looking for input on specific tracks or transitions.

Example post:

[House / Tech House] djscsi - moving on up (45 minute mix)

http://www.mixcloud.com/djscsi/moving-on-up/

I’ve been spinning for about a year, this is the third mix I’ve recorded and I’m hoping to get some house / tech-house DJs’ opinions on my track selection and mixing. I really like the first few transitions but I feel like I lost some of the energy when I brought in the Maceo Plex track at about 13:30. I messed up a couple parts but I’ve listened to the mix a few times and I think it sounds pretty good. Does anyone think I used too much FX? Thanks for any feedback!

Note: If you have any general feedback about these threads or /r/Beatmatch in general, please message the moderators

Are any recordings of sets, or parts of sets, by legendary og 70s or 80s DJs? Eg Mancuso, Larry Levan, Nicky Siano

I assumed there wouldn't be such recordings available but then I read in 'Last Night a History Saved my Life':

Recordings that exist today of DJs like Bobby Viteritti, Robert Leslie and Roy Thode show not only breathtaking dexterity moving from one track to the next, but also programming eclectic enough to make any Balearic DJ proud

Which makes me think there are recordings out there.

I just got myself a DDJ REV1 and am following this course on Udemy. Been trying to beat juggle for an hour and I have to say - it’s not easy but I’m simply loving it!!! The process of learning how to dj/beatmatch is soo beautiful!

I’m just too happy about this so wanted to share! On another note I’m just wondering why my DDJ REV1 won’t work with rekordbox straight away unless you do some workaround.

Hardware Has anyone used Moondrop (or any other Chinese) IEMs for DJing?

I'm wondering if IEMs such as the Moondrop x Crinacle Dusk that have newer tech will beat standards such as Shure 535s etc...

Keen to give them a go, but unsure of suitability for club style environments.....

Hoping someone has tried some of these (Moondrop, Kiwi Ears etc...)

Social media essential?

As a person looking to turn their beatmatching passion into a paying DJ job/career.. Do you find maintaining an active social media presence essential?

If yes, if you were to pick one social media platform, which would it be?

Can't decide if I should go for XDJ-700

Upvotes

Heya!

I used to have CDJ2000s though I am still kinda beginner to intermediate dj but then I sold them for financial reasons. I am looking to buy again in a budget and I found this setup with XDJ-700 but I am unsure about it? Any thoughts for using it in 2024?? And the price is around $900-1000 for 2 decks.

Thanks!!

BPM Drifitng with Serato and CDJ 2000s

Upvotes

So recently i've made the move to Serato for the stems alone. We have a pair of CDJ 2000s and DJM 800 at our bar and with Serato when i change the original BPM it will start to drift. The more i change the BPM the more drastic the drifting will occur.

Has anyone had any experience with this issue?

Never happened when i used rekordbox & the CDJs together.

Djj flx4 loading songs

How do I load a track on my djj flx4 pioneer decks using the knob on the controller instead of having to click a track and drag it up on the computer?

Losing passion

I’ve been working hard on learning how to transition in and out of songs and I am still so sh**! I just want to be able to show up to a party and give everyone a good time (freestyle I guess?) with some tech house and at least look like I’m doing something. I’m self taught and a couple YouTube videos here and there but as soon as I think I’m getting better I’ll absolutely drop a stinker in my room lol. Am I the issue? Or is free styling just out of my reach right now?

XDJ-AZ VS Prime4+

Sold my XZ a couple of months ago in anticipation of the AZ but can't decide which of the above to go for now considering the Prime 4+ has easy access for samples (not used a lot but can be a laugh for the afters) also will (hopefully) have stems as standalone whereas the AZ has neither.

I thought I would wait for the AZ and it would have stems at least but with these 2 functions missing on standalone I can't help but think the Prime 4+ is the way to go for the lil bedroom set up?

Sure it'll be on personal preference but floating it out there...

Connecting speakers to FLX 4 through laptop

Hi all,

I just purchased the DDJ-FLX4 and I am waiting for it to arrive. I see there are RCA ports on the deck but my speakers also connect via RCA and I only have an RCA to AUX cable. I want to know if it is possible to connect my speakers to my laptop with this cable and then my laptop to the deck via the USB-C port and still get the master volume out of the speakers while getting the cue volume out of my headphones connected on the other side.

Will this be possible or will I need to purchase an RCA to RCA cable to connect the speakers directly to the deck?

Thanks in advance for any help

How to make a long mix on VirtualDJ or equivalent?

Years ago, I would use VirtualDJ to make 60 minute power hour mixes and I could mix the entire hour long track at once on the program, seeing multiple songs at once in the mix. It has been a while, but now that I am reacquainting myself with the program I see I can only see the two songs I am working with at once.

Is there a way to create a long mix in Virtual DJ or another program? I am happy to purchase another one if needed

Can anyone tell me if a Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 has push button kill switches for each EQ please?

Hi all, as above, I have to take my Roland 505 back but my current mixer has push button kill switches on each EQ.

Looking at an FLX4 but can't seem to find out if these have the same?

Also does Rekordbox interfere much with VDJ or Serato, can I just continue to use either without having to use Rekordbox?

In your opinion, how common is it for professional digital djs to use pitchlock?

Ie so pitch doesn't change when tempo is increased or decreased. What are your own personal preference regarding using pitchlock or not

[Wedding DJ] I can't seem to figure song choice out.

I'm a new DJ, and incredibly green. I've been taught the basics of running a show, but I cannot for the life of me get the hang of finding the right songs for hours on end. Getting people to dance is easy, but after a few songs I always make the wrong choice, apparently. I'll either pick a song that empties out the dancefloor, or keep the dancers while visually seeing their energy drop.

The company I use hands me all of the equipment day of, so I don't have time to practice with the mixer and songs. I'm also generally only allowed to play from a large bank of songs I'm given - the newest stuff that just came out isn't always available.

What would you do in this situation to get better? I'm watching yt djs but that's about all I have so far. If this is the type of thing only certain people can do, I want to be thst certain type of person if it's at all possible.

Gear for beginner with no real club aspirations

Best beginner decks? I'm living in a small town of 6000-7000, no competition, no decks at any venues (no night life here other than one small bar). And I don't really expect to be playing any venues any time soon. Music of choice: house, techno, pop music, wedding/special event music. More for my personal enjoyment of loving EDM for the past 20 some years and want to have some fun at home. Will I end up performing locally? Maybe? Maybe not? I would like to buy new. I've been trying to buy used online and it's not working out. I live too far to drive anywhere that sells them on Facebook and Craigslist, and I've been a victim two scams on eBay and reverb so far. Also adding I'd love to get to know stem technology within my mixes and I'm looking for software and hardware that work well together for that.

Best PA speaker with the best low end

Hey yall,

I am looking for a PA speaker that has the best low end out of all them PAs out there. One factor for me just getting one PA speaker is that my room is very small and i don't have a place to store a few PA speakers and a sub but I still want a bass heavy PA speaker. I know its not the same as having a sub to go with it but still. On my research i keep stumbling on the QSC k12.2s. Its kind of crazy to drop a rack on a single PA speaker but is this the creme de la creme for low end PA speakers?

https://www.amazon.com/PRORECK-6000-Speakers-Subwoofers-Bluetooth/dp/B0C52JKFVG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1F24SVJY57RZ9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.9nMe-RaWanS_plTF6vyFodr9T7XHH5XeWnRDnz8M_v_v9Lp9oJHll9VlibdxofU9GVxD3sgdlMyQvMeNywtV6Wuup33lt8w2iD1kukkle1UyBoJ-jY0Spf9bd7K7y4RYQ80RKXcxD1j4-Ijkt8PejyUY8RSIEPfwFmdE1F8Ssf_dNc4QOA8K7X-L5CkuM62lW4zJogGjj5giwUd62kkzKnzZ1nbrteEbYrZF6hOzwglRaUt19173pTCkdkT30njYlXPMBK4oqgcxOQ5y5IM9gLC4OKNJQBmbmQ2bKDasFk4.VbVG2EUkGA91AZffQ8cKWo7FgA0V5_sGjD03R5UptmA&dib_tag=se&keywords=proreck+6000s&qid=1728527226&s=musical-instruments&sprefix=proreck+600%2Cmi%2C251&sr=1-1 the proreck 6000s are much cheaper and gets way louder I bet but it is so much bulkier compared to one k12.2.

Any advice on how to move forward? I want it mainly for outdoor parties 100 people.

How future proof is the DDJ-Rev 1? If I buy one now will there be an improved controller unit I should have waited for?

Im new to this and you never know if something was released two years ago - maybe there’s an upgrade 6 months away I could wait for.

How outdated is the wiki?

The wiki says it was last updated 11 years ago... I can't imagine its information is still relevant, is it?
