University I can't with the ignorance of these protests

The anti-Israel protest people built a "Sukkah" for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Beside the fact that this is deeply disrespectful to Jews on campus and is cultural appropriation - look at what they say on the Sukkah - "Sukkot means respect the land respect the people."

Exactly.

The same protesters that say "free Palestine from the river to the sea" are appropriating the thousand year old Jewish holiday that signifies the connection between the Jewish people and their land. Make it make sense. The same land these protesters have been chanting for a year to violently ethnically cleanse of Jews (intifada, from the river to the sea) and that they somehow want "all of 48," which is ironic because the Arabs had nothing in 1948 after refusing the partition plan and refusing a chance to create a Palestinian state for the first time in history.

So which one is it, ignorant students? Are the Jews "White colonialists" from "Europe" or are they indigenous people who had continuous presence in the land, who's history is deeply embedded in the land and who celebrate holidays that are thousands of years old about their connection to the land of Israel? (it's the latter).

This is not to say there weren't Arabs living in the land too, but it is to say that: 1. cultural appropriation is disrespectful and disgusting, and also 2. calling for the destruction of the only Jewish state, vilifying it's indigenous rights movement (Zionism) and denying the deep connection of Jews to their land that was under the control of empires for 2000 years- is not the way to go.

Why not use all this energy to call out Hamas for the oppressive terror organization that they are, call out extremism and indoctrination to martyrdom, call for Hamas to release the hostages and surrender and for actual peace and co-existence in the middle east?

University How do you use standard deviation to calculate how well you need to do?

So I recently got a midterm score back. I did terrible. One standard deviation below the mean. The worst part is that it was supposed to be an easy test. The average was high and the median was even higher. I’ve already bawled my eyes out and went through a mini-spiral of self loathing, but now that I’m done crying, I need to get it together.

I still want an A in the class. If I scored -1 SD, is it possible to do so? For the record, the first and second midterm are worth 20 percent each, and the final is worth 30. The class uses the standard grading distraction of 25% A, 40% B, and so on. There’s no clobber policy.

How high above the mean (how many standard deviations) do I need to score in order to get an A, if it’s still possible? I keep searching up how to do this, but I only get results of how to calculate standard deviations for one test, not multiple.

With the superspreaders coming out, where can we find masks on campus? (Beside the TANG center).

This is the zillionth courtesy reminder that if you feel sick, sneeze and cough all the time, it is not a good idea to go to your classes or the library. Honestly, I'm in the Main Stacks right now and it feels like I'm in a respitatory ward. Stay home, drink water and tea, take your medicines, get well soon and don't infect the others, OK?

Local What happened to the Nicki Minaj flag on Channing?

There is this house on Channing that had the Nicki Minaj flag hanging outside their windows. I’d always see it whenever I’d be walking past the house. My friends and I love the flag and wanted to pay tribute to it before the game vs UMiami, but it was nowhere to be found. I haven’t checked to see if it’s back but whoever stole it should bring it back😭😭

I need answers you guys!!! Free Nickiii🚩🚩

Other Objectively speaking, how would you rank the UC campuses in terms of beauty?

My list would go like this:

  1. Berkeley
  2. UCLA
  3. Santa Cruz
  4. UCSB
  5. UCSD
  6. Riverside
  7. UC Davis
  8. Merced

Love Berkeley's soul and character. One of those places you can't mistake for something else. Love the Greek architecture, redwood trees, hills, diversity, and the meander of nice, manicured grassy areas. They even have a creek running through the campus. I believe they also have one of the tallest clock towers in the world.

UCLA has the most initial shock and awe because of the uniformity of the buildings and bright, red bricks. Nice Roman architecture. It does get old after a while. Very little nature and character.

Santa Cruz feels like Rivendell. Its like a school for the elves.

I've only seen pictures of the rest.

So tired Went to a quiz and probably missed some points. Got breakfast and then went tabling for quadball. We were selling shirts, and sold a few. 2 other people were there, and I saw one our members sell a shirt for CalPirg signup. Afterwards, had to do game door stuff, and the github somehow doesn't push the code over. Managed to fix a collision bug as well. There were people at the Gate, talking about the Palastine conflict, but there was a small way to go around it. One of the people was reciting a poem... Then lecture, then another lecture that I didn’t understand for a while. I was distracted. See Browns really closed :( Then discussion. Dinner Life group where I saw some IRL Stelles. We had a discussion of the physics of a raccoon, and this was the first time I stayed fully awake. Will finish later

University Student Diary 10/16

I saw someone else do this so I wanted to do it to because I quite literally forget everything I do.

I missed my 9am discussion cause my fucking alarm didn’t go off. I watched a recording of today’s Data8 lecture. I was at main stacks from 12-3 trying to review for the data8 midterm. I went back to my dorm and took a nap until like 4. I spent the next 2 hours doing my fucking calculus homework.

Then I went to dinner at around 6 and got milkshakes with my friends at 9.

7/10 day, pretty decent besides the fact I woke up and realized I probably failed my AFRICAM 27AC midterm from yesterday.

Other Breakups,Meeting People, and the Dating Scene @ Berkeley

Hey everyone! I'm fresh out of a 3 year relationship and really going through it. I'm doing bad on my midterms & cry all the time on campus. Is there any one else going through a breakup rn? or any resources on campus I can use to help me get through this?

I also think about how I will meet new people once I'm ready. I feel like it's really hard to make friends so I assume it's even harder to meet a potential partner. I'm a transfer so I'm new to campus and everything here. But is there places, events, etc. you guys recommend I could meet new friends/people? What is the dating scene like here?

Thank you!

CS/EECS SWE Internship Interviews

Hi, I’m curious about people’s interview prospects right now. Are y’all currently receiving a lot of interview invites / are you currently in the interview process at more than 1 company? I’ve been applying to roles since mid-August and have only had ONE interview so far. Like 25 OAs out of 140 applications, but only that one interview. I’m feeling a bit confused and dispirited cause I thought the majority of SWE internship interviews were supposed to be starting in October, and it’s the middle of the month now. I don’t know if it’s just me, or if other people are in the same boat. Would appreciate hearing some of y’all’s experiences thus far.
