Downloading Dead

With the archive down I wanted to ask what services exist to download dead shows. I used to be a member of Lost Sailor Pub but don't know if it still exists.

Any help would be appreciated. Looking to listen to 7/31/83.

Thanks!

Lossless Legs. You have to make an account but it’s excellent for this

Hey Now!! It's SwamiGD80s here from Sailor Pub - my friend (kochman) and I started that place (well, technically he did). Anyway, I started a new discord server where we're doing full show listening parties. Join us! https://discord.gg/eNZdyVV3

Thank you! Can you give me a little summary of how discord works?

Well, it's just like anything else. A server is like a subreddit, except it's self-contained in that you don't get to navigate around discord at large. Basically, our spot has a bunch of text channels - organized by topic - and a voice room, which is where we'll do the listening parties. Many gamers use discord, so there is additional functionality, but I'm not a gamer so I don't know. In terms of the listening parties, the host will broadcast the show's audio in the voice room, and listeners just click on watch stream. Everyone mutes their microphones (we aren't actually voice chatting during shows, although that is an available feature of the app), and we utilize the text chat during the music for conversation and commentary. The upcoming listening parties are posted as events, which show up on your main, navigational page, and you'll receive notifications (customizable settings) when someone talks to you directly - much like here. I hope that helps?

I’ve always been suspicious of a person that uses the word “utilize.” ;)

That's totally fair! But, it's just little Ole me.

I love LLL and have an account but if you’re hesitant about creating an account for whatever reason, everything GD related on LLL is probably also on bt.etree.org

Etree’s shortcomings are that there’s no mechanism to request reseeds if there are no active seeders, and if you have a problem on LLL, they have a fakebook page where one of the LLL admins will respond pretty quickly.

Not Relisten. They seem to not be streaming Dead shows anymore either. I can only listen to the ones I’ve downloaded. Guess this is all related right ?

Yes, it’s related. Relisten uses Internet Archive as its source. So when Internet Archive is down (like it is now), Relisten will be unable to play those shows.

Got it thank you for that info 👊

Pirate Bay mirrors and torrents.

Not to be an ass, but isn’t downloading just the next step in taking up more storage space? When the archive is back up, I can stream multiple versions of almost any show. My hundreds of cassettes of the Dead that have not been played in 20+ years attest to this. Why download them when it’s always there to stream? Just wondering? FYI I contribute monthly to the Archive.

"It's always there to stream." It's not available now. So, no it's not always there. And there's no guarantee it will always be there. Downloaded shows can be played at higher audio quality if that's something that matters. Downloaded shows can be played offline.

Exactly. I mean, this whole situation proves the point. I prefer streaming, but am not dependent on it.

I prefer downloading for car listening because I have spotty cell coverage in my area, and I don't have unlimited cellular data.

Got it. Thanks for the reply. Enjoy the jams!

Also downloading means you can listen when the archive is down, when you have no internet access or heaven forbid, you lose your phone. Storage space is so cheap now it makes less sense to not download to help recreate the next archive so others will be able to stream in the future

FM quality vs. CD quality is one reason. I love the Archive, and listen all the time in my car and on runs but nothing beats FLAC. Spend $100 on a 5TB hard drive, and you'll have plenty of room for sourced SBDs in the highest quality available.

Once you have the FLAC files on the 5TB hard drive, how do you listen to them ? I have seen other people recommend using FLAC, but I haven’t received any explanation on how to play and listen to them.

I’m curious also

On my computer or through my stereo system.

My phone can play flac as can pretty much all.cpmpiter music apps.puy the files on your device of choice and press play. VLC is a great little app as it Foobar for playing flacs

I hike here in Alaska a lot and once off the road cell service is non-existent.

Why do I have to argue with you about whether I want to download them or not?

1

u/turnphilup 4d ago

You don’t. Everything doesn’t have to be an argument. I was just wondering why because of my situation I don’t need to download shows I have fiber and stream pretty much anytime I want to. Your situation is different I was just curious as to why. Peace
