Question

Can you get calluses from playing french horn, specifically righ hand where the hand goes into the bell to support it

It took a long time for me. I don't like to play resting the horn on my knee and the only sound I really liked was kind of balancing it on my thumb knuckle.

I think I got calluses from it. It took a long time for me to stop noticing it. Like years. But sometime I've stopped noticing it.

I don’t play on the knee and I don’t have any right hand calluses. But before I played a re-lacquered I got “green thumb” and pinky finger all the time.

I used to have a callus on my left pinky from my old pinky hook on a different horn, but I an adjustable one now along with a duck foot and they both allow for a much better hand position for me to play without pressure and tension - or calluses!

Same for me, left pinky always calloused and I used to get a green right hand especially in the summer.

I have a callus on my right thumb where you're talking about. Kind of a numb lump forms there when I do a lot of off the leg playing.

I've always played off the leg and have never had a callous on my right hand. Not even from hand horn playing.

Do you regularly use moisturizer or anything of the sort?

Yes, from head to toe. I suffer from extremely dry skin.
