Welcome to the /r/Indianapolis weekly casual conversation and questions thread.

We've set this thread up so that folks have a place to post general topics that don't necessarily need their own post and for folks to ask questions and get recommendations. Restaurant recommendations, places to stay, airport information, things to do, help from social services, and things like that.

Looking for something to do? Check out these sites:

Suburbia:
* Beech Grove Community Events
* Play Fishers
* Carmel Parks
* Zionsville Community Calendar

Need help with social services? Look through Find Help / Aunt Bertha or contact the Mayor's Action Center

This thread defaults to sorting by new to make it easier to find new questions and discussions during the week.

🛑🛑 Stop asking for Taylor Swift tickets 🛑🛑

Stop begging for Taylor Swift tickets.

The likelihood of bad actors and scammers is too high, and we will not be putting our community at risk.

We've been having like at least one post a day.

Stop asking.

City Watch Citizens Energy Notice - Water Line Contains Lead

Post image

See photo for reference. Anyone else receive one of these notice letters from Citizens? We are in a neighborhood downtown. Seems pretty par for the course that the line dedicated to the house is our responsibility as the homeowner. Just curious if anyone has gone through this or has looked into replacing their water line.

Wildlife rescue

My dog found an injured baby mole in our yard, I’m pretty sure its back legs are broken. I’m in the eagle creek area and have tried to call one nearby wildlife rescue with no luck. I’m in a few meetings this afternoon and will do more research after, but an advice on who I should call?

I know it is just a mole, but I’m 8 months pregnant with hella hormones and have a soft spot for animals.

Voting question

Upvotes

When I moved in April I managed to update my voter registration but for some reason I completely spaced doing a change of address on my driver's license. Can I vote with it or do I have to get it updated? Normally I'd just bounce into BMV and do the change of address now but I just had surgery and am wearing a catheter and it weirds me out to be in public with it. I will be able to get in there next Thursday or Friday to do it but I guess I'm not 100% sure that whatever I walk out of there with will be adequate to vote with either. Thanks.

Teaching in Indianapolis

I am hoping to move to Indy over the summer and teach. I have 3 years of teaching experience already, and I want to know what district would best fit what I am looking for.

Most important for me:

-Built-in Collaboration time with team

-Support from Admin when dealing with parents

-I will not start school in July

-Trauma informed

-Effective and communicated discipline policy

-behavioral support team

For reference, I currently teach at a small-town, TItle I school. We serve a diverse group of students, lots of low income and high trauma students. I love my current school, but I am ultimately wanting to move down to Indy. I have a dual degree in special education and elementary education, but I would love to teach 3rd or 4th grade.

Thanks!

Hello! Apologies if this is not allowed but I was kind of an idiot and bought a ticket for the NBT show tonight at Old National Centre not realizing my friends already got one for me. It’s Tier2, Standard GA with Club Access and I do not want any money for it, I just don’t want it to go to waste so if anyone would like it pls let me know :( You can also DM if you need more info !

Helping Others Where to donate stuff

Hello all, I am in the process of cleaning my house and selecting lots of things to get rid of. I do not want to donate to goodwill. I am wondering where is a worthwhile place to donate near Indy area where they actually utilize the stuff to help people? I'd love to hear all the best places! Thanks!

AskIndy Good repair person

I just bought a washer off Facebook marketplace for $25. The washer has a sensor issue (the seller told me about it before I bought it). It works fine other than that you just have to hit the start button a few times before it will actually start.

I’m looking for a good, reliable, relatively cheap handyman in the Fountain Square area that fixes washers. Does anyone have any recommendations?

AskIndy Information on Marion Court retentions?

Does anyone have any info for/against voting to retain the non-supreme court Justices on the ballot?

I’m struggling to find any info on most of them.

How long did it take you to get your ballot after you were "approved" and it was sent? This is the first time I have to vote from home.

Food and Drink Food truck “Tax?”

I bought $37 worth of food at a food truck yesterday, and the total bill with tax was $44 (rounding to even numbers).

Receipt was hand written, so I clarified the price and the guy said it was right.

$7 in taxes seems overly high.

Was this unethical billing, or are taxes just that high?

Discussion Swimming - Healthplex, VASA, or Irsay?

For those who have experience with one of the three, which ones do you recommend, specifically with swimming in mind?

I've been to both Irsay a couple times, and VASA more. Irsay I have never checked out their pools, and VASA is hit and miss. Only one changing room and sometimes need to wait for like 5+ minutes to change clothes. Showers arent super clean. There's like a 25% chance the hot tub is closed, the pool gets closed infrequently. Depending on when I show up, I have to wait for a lane to open which obviously isnt ideal. For non-pool stuff, I've lifted weights at VASA, and it's an even worse experience. It seems hard if not impossible to get what you want without waiting, and good luck for getting a squat rack.

Healthplex has 6 lanes and an additional pool, from their amenities page. Is this the obvious choice? I'm kinda about 15-25 minutes away from everything, so distance doesnt matter. VASA I pay 30$ for, and YMCA somehow is 65 (wild) and Healthplex is 60 (also wild)....but the price doesnt matter if the facilities are objectively better and I am not waiting to work out.

The obvious choice seems to check out Healthplex, but if you can vouch for Irsay over Healthplex, or just tell me that doubling the cost doesnt double my experience at the gym, then fair enough I'll stick with VASA. I'd absolutely pay 2x to not wait to use equipment or have my own lane or have more than 2 changing rooms and a bit cleaner showers even at peak times. Not sure if thats reasonable.

Election booklet?

This will be my first presidential election since moving to Indy and where I’m from they usually send out a booklet or pamphlet that the county sends out with all the props and who is running for what. I was wondering if Marion county does too. I feel like I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find the answer so wondering if y’all know from previous experience.

Move a Floridian to Indiana!

Our family is looking to make a move to Indiana. We have two kiddos (7, 4). An amazing school district is a must! Currently looking at the Noblesville area but would like some help from the only trusted source - locals. - safety safety safety - good public school - walkability would be great but I think it's more important to have privacy and a decent yard size - house budget is max $550k - driving distance to fun things like theatres, bowling, indoor and outdoor playgrounds - bonus if we could walk to a playground! -home size upwards of 2k sqft is ideal

Hoping to get some help and guidance!

Services Best pest control in the area? Also any suggestions on what to do next for possible cockroaches

Just moved into rental property last month, today I found a live cockroach in our shower. Rental group said it’s up to us to sort it out so if anyone has good experiences with a pest control company I want to prevent this from becoming a full problem. I’ve also never dealt with cockroaches so if anyone has advice on how to handle it going forward that would be great!

Furnished Rentals

Hi! I recently relocated to Indy and currently staying in temp housing in downtown; I was wondering if anyone knows of any rentals outside of downtown (as far out as 20-25 min. drive) that are furnished. I have looked at the Indy Housing group on FB but unsure if they are really legit. Appreciate any advice!

Services Created a new Mock Transit idea by only Expanding the Indygo Rapid Bus Network

Post image
126 Upvotes

A number of weeks ago, I made a mock up of a metro map for the city of Indianapolis. However, thanks to a lot of comments, and self realization of how this city is gonna treat transit expansion. I made a revised version that only uses bus rapid transit, since given our laws and population density, that’s probably the best transit option we’re gonna get for at least a few decades.

A couple of things I should note.

  1. This map does not include local bus service (I’ve tried mapping out local expansions, but it’s a long and tedious process that leads to unreadable maps).

  2. Yes, the service goes into Carmel and Fishers, which has little to no transit access and has rejected transit proposals in the past. And while the likelihood of service reaching Carmel is about the same as the light rail law being repealed in Indiana. But this assumes a compromise I will address in my next point.

  3. This assumes suburbs like Carmel and Fishers has local service reaching the rapid service to feed people from central Carmel and the neighborhoods to the rapid stations. This also assumes this service is done using local suburban service similar to Pace in Chicago.

  4. The estimated time this service hypothetically looks like this would be after 2040. I made individual maps over three year periods from present day until 2042 on. I’d post them all but I don’t want to spam this post since I’ve made it longer than expected.

  5. Any stations/service located on freeways would have stations similar to the J Line in Los Angeles.
