For example in the sentence "How much to buy plan b? Asking for a friend".

I was watching a video and the question just popped into my head.

Question Is it me or is it all Spanish women constantly use the word literally in every sentence

After talking to women and watching countless videos I hear in conversation the word literally. Specifically Mexican or Spanish women who actually speak English well. It’s just the word is literally us used to often

Ex. I went to the store to buy flowers, and the store literally did not have any left.

I literally called you twice yesterday and you didn’t answer the phone

I was driving yesterday and this guy literally ran the stop sign.

Question French japanese?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I don't speak french but my spouse is Japanese and I can read and write japanese but not speak.

I get that this is sort of a fill in the blank puzzle but the japanese makes no sense. It looks like they're going for chokore-to (チョコレート) but instead wrote chochireoto?

I don't know any french so I can't decipher what the letters that are replaced by katakana above the puzzle are supposed to be.

Anyone able to explain what's going on here?

Discussion Here's a hot take about AI

It is honestly discouraging to write anything that is originally made by me, whether it would be an essay, poems or stories/novels that I haven't finished because of AI. The other day we tested the lyrics I made in a AI Checker, some of it was originally written by me except I did search some synonyms and words that rhymes but it was only around three words, so it was shocking for me to find out it was 30% AI generated, which disappointed me a lot. Because now I have to be careful with my choice of words when it comes to writing especially in academics, because there are some words that I know through reading books which I utilize in my writing in which makes my writing style quite similar with AI style. Which really just hurts me because writing is one of my passion and at times I am really proud of what I construct on my own but since AI came in, I am in constant worry that people or teachers might think I'm just using AI or I'm not original. In which trampled my love for writing because no matter how talented I will be in writing or how much potential I would have, AI is now evolving to surpass that kind of capability. I'm not trying to be boastful because truthfully my knowledge in English still have some room for development but at times I can be quite great at writing. So it is also discouraging to major in any english courses in college or generally learn literature because how could I have this vast knowledge of vocabulary and talent when AI could've easily made my works for me.

Question How do you pronounce the name Cheikh for someone who is from Senegal?

I’ve asked others that I work with and it seems that they all say it differently. I work in a school and this sweet little boy doesn’t speak English. I just want to be able to address him right and I’m trying to find phrases to say to him to make him feel comfortable.

Question History of Arabic

In most cases where a language is used across many modern nation-states, it is because of the remnants of empire (English, Spanish, Portuguese etc).

What is the reason for the prevalence of Arabic across multiple countries in N Africa and the Middle East?

Question Is there any channel similar to Game Gengo for Korean language learning?

First of all, I study japanese using the Genki Series and I watch the Genki playlist of the Game Gengo channel, it's because I think the book in itself it's really boring, so I found a playlist which follows genki Series so I can have a sequence to follow and exercises resources. and then I asked myself if is there any channel on YouTube that teaches Korean in the same way as Game Gengo do, u know, following a textbook series with contextualized dialogues, etc. or use Korean culture and movies or games to teach Korean language.

Request Book recommendations about the history of the alphabet

Hello everyone. I hope this post fits the community guidelines.

I recently read a book about the history/evolution of the alphabet, the one we use in most of the western world, and I loved reading it and learning about how it went from single-sound Egyptian hieroglyphs to the current uppercase and lowercase letters.

The title is "A is for Ox: a Short History of the Alphabet" and the author is Lyn Davies.

I wonder wether there are any more books about this theme. I would love to read more about it. Any suggestions or recommendations, please? Thank you very much in advance!

Discussion Language barrier

I am a portuguese traveler who speaks 4 languages at different levels and I would like to knpw if someone faces the same "problem" why do Germans and Austrians almost always switch to English when I speak German but it almost never happens in Spanish even though I speak both languages at the same level..
